Food is okay. Meat was not as tender as everyone was saying. Flavour of the meat yes it was delicious, just the right amount of spices. Portion was a good amount. Try the pickels, they good. Server was busy & got our order wrong. First impression wasn't that good. Had a smoked meat sandwich somewhere else(SMP) the next day & the meat was perfectly tender there. Small dining area at Schwartzs im sure its crazy busy. Restrooms are tiny & dirty.View more

I've been looking forward to visiting Schwartz for sometime now. Unfortunately, my husband sandwich was better than mine. Sadly, mine was dry. Flavour was good, but yeah, it was a little dry. This is gonna sound blasphemous, but Costco Schwartz was better / juicier than the restaurant's . I might have to visit it again To see if it'll be better, but ngl.. I was a little bit disappointed. Still, it was an experience. People lining up, sitting next to people you don't know, & eating the famous smoked meat sandwich.View more

I recently ordered the famous smoked meat sandwich from Schwartz's Deli through UberEats, & I can now understand why there's always a massive line in front of their store! As new residents of the neighborhood, we've passed by countless times & were always curious, but after finally trying it, I can say it was absolutely worth the wait! The smoked meat was tender, flavorful, & perfectly seasoned, with just the right amount of spice. The bread was fresh & held everything together beautifully. Every bite was a delicious experience. As they say, a must-visit restaurant while in Montreal! If you've been to Katz's in NYC, this feels like a simpler version, but it still delivers high-quality food & a cozy atmosphere. Definitely try the Schwartz Poutine-it's a standout! We had to pay in cash as the card machine was broken, so be prepared for this potential inconvenience. Street parking is manageable, & while lines do form, there's a quick turnover of customers, so the wait isn't too long. Highly recommended for a classic Montreal food experience!View more

I came here because a friend recommended Schwartz's Deli & their famous smoked meat sandwich. I was lucky to get a seat at the „bar" with a good view on the meat. The guy behind the counter was really friendly, taking the time to introduce all the options they have, & what the famous specialities are. I went for the smoked meat sandwich, with a portion of fries. My meal came really quickly, & I must say: it was sensational! The sandwich was so packed with meat, that it was impossible to eat it with my hands. I went for fork & knife. The delicious meat with mustard & some bread was the perfect combination. Not dry, not super moist, but exactly at the right point. The fries were crispy, & really the cherry on the top. I took a Canada Dry out of the glas bottle with it - perfect really. A glas-bottled Canada Dry. As simple as that. Prices are relatively high if you order all that, but it's worth every penny in my opinion. For those confused about this place, I'll shed some light. First, why it's popular & second the quality of the food, & why people get these quite different things mixed up. Popularity: The smoked meat sandwich is a big deal because it's a LOT of meat, which makes the price of 14.50 + tax "good, not great" in my books. This, along with the long line (which can be bypassed for takeout) & "no frills" atmosphere make it different & fun. It's an institution, it's original, it has character, & the line of tourists (notably, not many locals) draw attention & adds to the hype. There is value in hype, I respect that. But.. The meat: Usually, when good meat is slow cooked, the connective tissue softens ending in a "melt in your mouth" effect. Schwartz is not that unfortunately. They are clearly aware, as they try to compensate for the dry texture by including a bit of extra fat. It gets about half way there. The sandwich: A good sandwich is about balance. The mustard has a decent sweet tang, & the bread (seemed slightly stale) offsets the tough meat somewhat. A pickle would go a really long way though, or any kind of acidity really. My stomach is struggling hours later due to the tough lean protein... be warned! Conclusion: If you want a lot of meat that looks cool & is an experience, do it. If you just want a good, tasty & balanced sandwich & aren't impressed by the hype & the vibe...eh. There's a place on Mt Royal that is far superior, cheaper & bakes their own sandwich rolls fresh. Forget the name, but it's on the Jeanne Mance side & that line is 100% about the food. Edit: It's called Kahwa Cafe & is rightfully rated better than Schwartz. Granted it's different, but I'd wage 9/10 people would be better off going there.View more

Visited Schwartz Deli holidaying in Montreal for 2 days. This restaurant is one must try & not to be missed. We had juicy, Smoked Meat Sandwich, full of flavour. Most popular sandwich for the first timers. Highly recommend! Coleslaw made with vinegar was tge idel side for the sandwich. We had A&W cold Root Beer.View more

Schwartz' Deli is an iconic Montreal restaurant that is known for its smoked meat. Expect to wait in a line which, in our case, moved quote quickly. All of this is for good reason! The smoked meat is the best I've ever had (& I've had smoked meat in NYC, Atlanta, Nashville, Austin & throughout Florida, too name a few places). People share a table seating 6. I ordered a side of cole slaw ( which is solely vinegar based & very tasty!) The star, the smoked meat, is tender, flavorful & ample in sandwich serving size, if you don't opt for a small plate or a large plate. Be advised that the Cherry Cola is "Cott," not Coca Cola. It is a our now tasty than Cherry Coke. You MUST eat smoked meat at Schwartz' Deli if you are in Montreal & want quality smoked meat!! I will return when next I visit!View more

Service can be described using only one word. Amazing!! Our waiter was very, very kind & friendly. He tried to get to know us & even was okay being in a picture with us! Moving onto the food, our smoked meat sandwiches were a must have! The bread was very soft & fluffy, while the meat was not dry & perfectly cooked! The smoked meat poutine, as well was also phenomenal! It was above average poutine with Schwartz's above average meat! However, like all other restaurants, Schwartz has its downsides. Some of the forks & cups looked dirty & unwell washed & scrubbed. However, the dirty forks & cups do not, at all make a dent in my 5 star review for this restaurant.View more

The smoked meat sandwich was fantastic, with meat that melts in your mouth-highly recommend! However, the Schwartz poutine was disappointing. Despite the delicious gravy, it had very little smoked meat, & the fries were burnt & stale. I wouldn't recommend it. The sitting area is so limited that there were about 30 people outside under the scorching sun waiting to be seated, while there's not much merit in sitting in the dining area anyway. The takeout side on the other hand, was well-managed & the line was almost non existent. I would recommend choosing takeout instead.View more

A local told me Montreal has the best bagels & smoked meats in the world - now as a snobbish New Yorker, I raised an eyebrow. I have to try this classic deli serving smoked meats in order to corroborate. Even in the ungodly heat of this Monday afternoon the line was long - pro tip: go through the takeout counter & save you some time, they have some seating in the back. I tried the poutine Schwartz style - a classic poutine with a heaping serving of smoked meat. The meat was tender, smoky & not salty at all, but still flavorful. You can get your smoked meat fix here for sure, if you're a NYer craving a pastrami sandwich. It won't disappoint. Now, is it better than the delis back home? I plead the 5th.View more

Schwartz's is an experience, you line up to get in & often end up sharing a table as most of the tables seat 6 except for the counter. It's not a place to linger, you go in & get smoked meat the way they've been doing it for about 96 years & the only question you'll get asked about the sandwich is whether you want full fat or medium. Still it is for me, one of the best smoked meat sandwiches you can get, served on rye bread with mustard.View more

The smokiness, the seasoning, the tenderness beats anything I had in NY. There are two sides. One side is run by warm, friendly people who seem to have a deep connection to the restaurant. The other side is run by hostile 20 somethings who seem to be resentful of anyone who walks in the door. This may make it difficult for Schwartz's to pass the torch & keep the business alive. When it hits it hits. I don't know what it is but the inconsistency is what takes it away from me. Over the decades this has been an iconic place to visit with friends or anyone travelling to the city you would say go here or across to Main's but Maine is now closed ... I prefer the take out section rather than the sit in If you're lucky then you'll get one hot & really tasty .. if you're not so lucky it'll still be good . We call it pastrami in NYC but apart from the different name the smoke meats at Schwartz's is amazing. & you can get it with poutine! Schwartz's always has a line but it moves fast & is worth the wait. Love the classic diner atmosphere & no frills service.
