Review Summary

Reviewers describe Sao Sao as a popular, casual Vietnamese spot known for generous, fresh dishes and friendly service, with the pho and grilled chicken pho repeatedly highlighted as excellent and the vibe described as warm, lively, and family friendly or good for a date night. The menu offers a wide range of bowls and entrées at a solid value, with large portions and fresh vegetables, and several guests say the takeout options are convenient and that the staff are quick and attentive in normal hours. However, a minority note inconsistencies such as slower service during peak times, occasional lapses in courtesy, and some dishes not meeting expectations—one or two reports of greasy broth, undercooked noodles, or cold deliveries. Reservations are sometimes advised during busy periods, and parking can be tricky near certain locations. Overall, Sao Sao comes across as a dependable favorite for many diners, with frequent praise for flavor and hospitality and only a few caveats about consistency.

My go-to spot for the BEST grilled chicken pho!👌💯🔥

The grilled chicken has gluten ».

First time ordering from this restaurant & very disappointed.
We ordered two pho soups with grilled chicken through Uber Eats specifically because of the good reviews. In the notes, we clearly mention'gluten, allergy' since one of us cannot eat gluten for health reasons.

Despite this, they sent the soups with a note saying'the chicken has gluten.'
So why prepare & send it anyway?

We paid $50 for two soups & both arrived containing gluten. Instead of taking two seconds to call or message us to suggest another dish, confirm an ingredient, or simply cancel/refund, they just sent food that we cannot eat.

This shows a lack of care & respect for customers with dietary restrictions. Extremely disappointing experience & makes us feel like they only cared about taking the money, not about the customer.

The pho was way too greasy, which made it feel a bit heavy. The grilled chicken also seemed like it was just reheated-way too dry & tough. Definitely not what I was hoping for.

Overall, the Vietnamese food here is okay, but definitely not authentic. We tried both the pork & chicken bowls. The meat was good, but the fish sauce didn't have much flavor, which kind of ruined the dish.

Wouldn't recommend the iced coffee-it's nothing like Vietnamese coffee. & $6.50 for a regular filter coffee? That's just too much.

Also, the service is not very good. I had to remind them three times for extra napkins

I came to have lunch & to order a take-out lunch. I liked the food, the grilled chicken with rice vermicelli etc., a bit of water at the bottom of my bowl at the end, the sauce offered is good but sticks a little to the vermicelli etc. The coffee comes with the lunch, but I had to ask for it at the end of my meal & despite having paid for two meals, I only got one coffee. Good coffee though. The salad portion with the meals is a bit bland, I don't know if it's the preparation or if it's put in the fridge well in advance of the service. The pork is good, but be careful for people who don't like strong ginger or lemongrass marinades. The spring rolls are good but have a lot of grated carrot. A bit small too. I think the option of taking or not taking the bean sprouts & lime next to the bowls of soup would be appropriate, to reduce food waste. I liked the somewhat discreet service less, but it may be my style & preferences in terms of customer service or that I am a Millennial. I will go back with my partner, I will try something else, the chicken sandwich is good - even better with an addition of sriracha to consider!

Let's give the compliment where is due. The Place looks great, the menu has great potential. The items looked attractive & well thought out. But for us the most important point is the execution/taste of the food. & somewhat the service. We tried the curry chicken. The beef pho, the bun chicken bowl & the chicken vermicelli soupe/pho. Overall the taste of food was very disappointing. - The curry is too acidic, flavour profile not well balanced & not very complexe. We love Asian curries. Have tried 30+ Asian curry restaurant in Canada, & 50+ asians curries around the world. This is one of the worst. - the bun don't have enough authentic sauce/punch of flavour. It was rather blend. - the soups are good enough. Probably the best item out of what we were able to try at the restaurant. But after trying at least 20+ Vietnamese restaurant around Montreal. I would say it's a little below average. Ingredients are fresh. No problem there. The decors are cute. The service was slow, but the servers are nice & came to apologies a few times as they forgot us a few times & spilled hot soupe almost on my toodler. Overall feels this restaurant has potential, but definitely need a few adjustment in term of flavour execution.

I wanted to like this place, I really did. MC pho is my Brossard go-to pho restaurant but it's closed today, I guess it wouldn't hurt if I'd try a new place, Sao Sao was jumping to my face, however it didn't stand up to my expectation...at all. The restaurant is actually well decorated. The server was nice & cute, too. BUT, the spicy beef rice noodles, also known as bun bow hue, were a big miss to me. First of all, the noodles were way too undercooked. When it comes to cook these kind of thick rice noodles , you have to soak them into hot water for a couple of hours ( at least 30 minutes), then you can cook them into perfection, however, I don't think the cook here knows this technique like every other pho restaurants out there. The rice noodles are too hard to chew. Even bending them is difficult. Second, the broth was not even hot, not tasty at all. This lemongrass flavor was missing, due to the lemongrass chunck that they use was sitting in the fridge too long, I assume. & the meat was nearly fresh, for spicy beef soup , I don't expect lots of flavorless prok stew in there. Big disappointment. The curry chicken bowl (p4)was pretty standard. That was the only reason that I rate this place 3 stars. Oh, one last thing, they don't have basil ...

I went there twice, I got the General Sao & the Curry chicken, both very good & generous portions I don't remember the prices tho. The website was outdated when I went, it said it was a bring your own alcohol restaurant but it isn't anymore so a small disappointment on that point when I went there.
