Nourriture moisi!
While Ive been to Porte Grecque Estiatoria once before in the winter and had enjoyed the experience, I was really disappointed last Sunday when I went there for dinner and they claimed the section we were seated in had no AC. When we asked them to turn on the three ceiling fans hanging above us they said they were merely decorative. The food was good but I honestly couldnt enjoy it because of the intense humidity combined with the over crowded room/body heat. It was a miserable experience; we were all dripping with sweat at the table. Honestly dont book this place for dinner in the summer unless its a cool day or they can assure you over the phone that there will be air-conditioning!!! If your AC is not fully functioning in sections of your establishment do not book out those sections and make a dining experience horrible for your patrons; its bad business!!!! I wont be going back again!!!
I really like going here. Not an extensive menu, but alright. I always go for the vegetarian platter and it's always delicious. Good portion sizes, friendly staff, overall nice decor. And it's BYOB which is a huge plus. I'd recommend this place.
This is a great restaurant to hold a private party upstairs. We had our engagement party there. They also have a great terrasse and we've been there quite a few times for lunch. The food is very good, and the ambiance is very nice.
The last few times we went, we were disappointed with the slow service.
The food at this restaurant is very good and price are as well.
Here are the problems:
1. if you eat in the entry way in the winter, it is freezing as there is no heat and the cold wind hits you when the door opens. The door is opened frequently
2. If you eat on the second floor, the temperature is about 27 and you will be sweating! There is alos quite a foul ordor that comes from the old wood walls that smell very much like a stable.
3. the restaurant is very crowded and the tables are very close to eachother. It is difficult to manuever and people are within a foot of eachother.
4. It is very loud as it is very crowded
5. the older female waitress is quite unpleasant
6. the older gentleman is nothing other than flat out rude!!!!
7. you can never get a reservation other than before 6 pm or after 8:30 pm on week-ends even if you call weeks before.
8. No matter what time your reservation is, you are sure to wait 15 mins before being seated in a very crowded area.
9. parking is virtually impossible!
1. the waiters are hot!!!
2. the food is good.
This place is very popular and I suppose that is the reason why the owner feels that he can be rude to young and old alike. It is a shame that success seems to have ruined the ambinace of this great restaurant. The crowded areas are truly unpleasant. If the food wasn't a 9/10 I would never go back.
Nice atmosphere, friendly service and the food is well prepared and consistently tasty. The menu is has all the standard Greek fare and prices are good.
When rating a restaurant, one must always take into account what one pays with respect to what he receives - in other words, value. On this note, Porte Grecque scores high.
By far its biggest asset is its setting, a centuries old converted stone house. It is perfect for a romantic late evening meal. The outdoor tree-covered terrasse is also wonderful in the summer. Avoid the open terrasse on Sources Blvd. - it's a little noisy.
As with many successful restaurants, it is family run, and, predictably, the service is above average. The staff is friendly and helpful in making menu suggestions. By now, the expectations are very high - which brings us to the food.
While a notch above the mass market BYOB Greek chains , the food could be a little more inspired. The fare includes all the mass market stadards (chicken brochette, pork shish-kebab, tzatziki, etc.) and some more original dishes such as bacon-wrapped scallops. The portions are sizable, while the presentation is merely adequate. Could Greek restaurants be a little more original and offer their main dishes with something other than the ubiquitous rice, salad and potato? However, given the price, it is an excellent value. And, of course, the restaurant is BYOB - another plus.
The only visible weakness were the actual menu cards, which were a little dingy and old - and should be replaced.
Don't expect a Greek culinary tour-de-force, but do expect a wonderful setting, friendly staff and a fairly inexpensive and satisfying meal.
I have been going to this restaurant for about 3 years now and I still have nothing but good things to say. The food is always great and the wait staff are always friendly. They go out of their way to ensure you enjoy your experience and cater towards your needs.
My husband and I went to La Porte Grecque last night and we were extremely satisfied when we walked out. The service was great. Our waitress was very attentive and kind. The food was great. We both had the filet mignon with 4 large shrimps. It's a large plate for what you are charged and it was worth every penny. For $16 a plate, we each had two pieces of succulent, perfectly grilled filet mignon with 4 large shrimps, amazing rice, salad and potatoes. The food was just perfect and we enjoyed every bite. Plus who can go wrong with BYOW!!! We live right around the corner from the restaurant so we go often and will continue going.
I went to this restaurant for a second time last Saturday. Service was satisfactory but they did go out of their way to "make" us a table. We were only 2 and were about to be rejected by the hostess since she says they require a reservation for Saturdays. The manager/owner was standing by and out of convenience made us a table so that we wouldn't be turned away which we appreciated. The food however was no better than Casa Grecque except a little more expensive and aimed at being presented in a traditional looking greek tavern. Our table was set up right in the entrance of the kitchen so it was difficult to eat and not get knocked by a waiter walking by with food. Then when we asked about desserts our waiter showed us the dessert then took off right away without us even getting the chance to say a word because he was blocking the walkway and the waitress behind him was very rude and impatient to get by. He then didn't come back to our table for another 10minutes to get our dessert order. Forget that. For the food I recommend you go to Casa Grecque where you will get the same food but for cheaper.
