Review Summary

Plâts De Pates Hong Mère is described across reviews as offering authentic northern Chinese cuisine with generous portions and solid value. The service is frequently praised as friendly and efficient, with food often arriving quickly, though a few experiences note slower moments or inconsistent service. Dishes such as tofu with aubergines, peanut sauce dumplings, and various stir fries are repeatedly highlighted for flavor and presentation. Takeout is consistently reliable and portions tend to be large, making it a common choice for sharing and casual meals. Some items receive criticism for being too sweet or too salty, for heavy batter, or for quality issues like over starch or bland meat in certain preparations. A few dishes like pad thai and orange beef are singled out as not meeting expectations, and a handful of visits are described as disappointing or inconsistent. Overall the sentiment is that Plâts De Pates Hong Mère is a standout option in Montreal for authentic flavors, with many customers returning regularly and recommending it to friends.

Hong Mère is amazing. I went with a group for a Wok cooking masterclass & we watched & learned as Chef Yu WOKed us through 11 dishes from his menu. We learned how to choose a wok & if we chose cast iron, how to season it for non-stick cooking. Then he showed us how he prepares, cooks & plates 11 different dishes. The attention to every detail & his mastery of North-Eastern Chinese & Szechuan cuisine is astonishing. This is no
assembly line. Every dish is cooked from scratch. My favourites were the Japanese tofu & Salt & Pepper shrimp, & spicy fish soup & crispy chicken...actually EVERYTHING is amazing. Family owned & operated...THIS is best of Montreal Chinese. & chef Yu wants to help people with limited exposure to discover AUTHENTIC Chinese. So ask about an alternative to General Tao & the other typical fare. You are going to be shocked at what you experience. I am going to make a video & attach it to this post late March 2026.

Delicious northern Chinese dishes, with varied flavours & spicing, with occasional accents of Szechewan peppers. The owners, including their professionally trained chef son, were welcoming & try hard to please (MSG: yes or no, your choice.)
The house specialty chicken legs & the ginger pork were memorable. Try the twice fried shrimps as well, you will likely not be disappointed if you like tempuras.
A favourite vegetable dish was the spicy cauliflower.

Really appreciated a new understanding of spices & aromatics in cooking. Great atmosphere, great food, great experience. Will be back!

The ma po tofu & fried rice were very nice. The other dishes were too much batter, barely any meat & not very similar as the pictures on the menu. Unfortunately, we didn't enjoy the orange beef & crispy pork, they were both too sweet & not balanced in flavours.

Eggroll came still cold in the middle. Mapo tofu was delicious but very salty. Food was reasonably priced & came quickly. Overall, my experience was below-average but not horrible. Could've just been a bad day.

I must have gone on an off day or something, as the meat dish I ordered was inedible where I couldn't finish the dish nor did I want to take it home. By far the worst Chinese restaurant food dish I've ever experienced in Montréal. Perhaps their vegetarian dishes are much better, such as a tofu or eggplant based one.

Uber... I'm very disappointed. The only dish that was good was the pork knuckle. Everything else was terrible.
Spring rolls burnt.... Fried Rice way too starchy... Pineapple, chicken unrecognizable inadequal breading, totally soaked... Beef & vegetables also not good... beef is either poor quality or they don't velvet their beef before they cook it.
Shrimp sezchuan inedible... consistency like mashed potatoes.
I would not recommend this restaurant unless all you order is the pork knuckle.

The food at Xiang Mama in Montreal was really good; the two of us finished all four dishes, especially the sweet & sour pork. As someone from Northeast China, it was truly wonderful to try, it tasted just like home.

One of the best Chinese restaurants in Montreal. The dishes taste the same as those in the restaurants in China. I am Chinese & this is the restaurant that I highly recommend to my colleagues & friends.
