I used to come here a few times a week, but over the last couple of years the fillings in the sandwiches have gotten thinner & thinner, & it's honestly sad. I understand inflation, but I'd rather pay a bit more & get the generously filled sandwiches you used to make.
Just a block from the popular Jean-Talon Market, Marché H?ng Phát is a Vietnamese grocery that also serves bánh mì sandwiches for only $7 CAD-easily one of the best food deals I found in Montreal. For $2 CAD more, you can add extra meat, which I highly recommend.
Inside, there's a large shared table with 6-8 seats & a counter with another 5-6 spots. It's casual but convenient for a quick bite. On my first visit, I tried the grilled pork & found the meat portion very thin, so the second time I ordered extra meat, which made a big difference. The sandwiches are served in classic style with house-made mayo, pickled carrots & daikon, jalapenos, & cucumber.
I also tried the BBQ pork option, but it turned out to be more like deli-style sandwich meat, not the char siu BBQ pork I was hoping for-so I wouldn't order that again. Other options include beef, meatball, & shredded chicken.
The menu is written in Vietnamese, French, & English. The staff preparing the sandwiches may not be fluent in English, but they understand enough that you can point, & the staff at the register do speak English. Pro tip: if you're dining in & want your sandwich toasted, ask while they're making it-before it's wrapped-& they'll toast it for free.
If you're already visiting Jean-Talon Market, this is a fantastic stop for an authentic, affordable bánh mì.

I love this place for its convenience & the fact that they are truly delicious banh mi's. The only downfall is one employee who really does not put any love in making the sandwiches & most times skimps out on the ingredients, the rest of the team are friendly & clearly put care into making a good banh mi but it's really a shame that I leave disappointed whenever I get my sandwich made by what seems to be one of the managers… for the most part I love this place but I truly am bummed out when I see it's them making my sandwich:
Marché Hung Phat serves up one of the best banh mi sandwiches I've ever had in Canada! The bread was perfectly crispy on the outside yet soft inside, & the fillings were fresh & flavorful, with just the right balance of meats, pickled veggies, & a hint of spice. Each bite had that perfect mix of crunch & savory goodness. It was so good that I couldn't leave without ordering another one to take back to Vancouver! If you're in the area & craving authentic Vietnamese flavors, Marché Hung Phat is a must-visit!
We've been getting our Banh MI from this store for over 12+ years & still remains the best in town. We know it's very good when most people from tournaments place a group order of 50+ sandwiches as lunch & snack! Please continue to make great Banh MI for a very long time & have a successful business! My personal favorite is the chicken & my wife is the beef. You can't go wrong with any flavours. C'est un marché qui vend des épiceries vietnamiennes & asiatiques ensuite vous trouvez une partie sandwicherie, des sandwichs banh mi à emporter ou manger sur place. Les meilleurs banh mi que j'ai mangé jusqu'à maintenant, service rapide & surtout sandwichs végétariens disponibles : tofu ou tofu champignons. Les dames qui travaillent ici sont gentilles! Les tables sont propres & organisées,on trouve des plantes tout autour de nous ! J'ai vu des petits desserts au frigo comme jello mais je n'ai pas eu le courage d'essayer! À découvrir!

Very friendly & efficient ladies working the counter! The sandwiches were fresh & delicious, the bread had a crispy exterior yet soft interior that paired well with the crunchy veggies & soft meat. Also reasonably priced at $6.95 each. They have a great variety of tasty che (ba mau, sam bo luong, suong sa hot luu & another kind I believe) & layered pandan jelly (there's no specific labels so it's a little hard to identify the products sometimes) + their iced coffee is strong enough to wake you up (& not too sweet). Overall, have been going to this place a few times & it's always been a good experience, would definitely recommend!!
A foodie experience unlike no other, sandwiches rich in flavour & taste, & staff warm & friendly. Even their store is full of amazing selections of various imported items. Would definitely come back again & recommend others to try as-well
