About

Maison Sai Yan presents a comprehensive menu that bridges traditional Szechuan heat with the delicate, fresh profiles characteristic of authentic Vietnamese cooking. Diners navigate a diverse selection of plates ranging from numbing, spice-forward peppercorn dishes to aromatic herb-infused broths. The kitchen emphasizes bold, layered flavor profiles that define the intersection of these two distinct East Asian culinary traditions. Each serving focuses on precise execution, utilizing traditional techniques to ensure that texture and spice levels remain balanced throughout the meal. The dining room provides a straightforward environment centered on accessibility and culinary exploration. Patrons encounter a reliable rotation of classic noodle soups, stir-fried proteins, and savory vegetable compositions designed for consistent results. This establishment functions as a primary destination for those seeking a broad spectrum of regional Asian flavors within one unified menu structure.

Maison Sai Yan is widely recognized as a hidden gem offering authentic and high-quality Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine that consistently impresses diners with its fresh seafood and flavorful dishes. Many guests appreciate the intimate and clean atmosphere, noting that the restaurant provides a comforting dining experience that rivals larger establishments. While some reviewers find the pricing to be on the higher side and note that the space could benefit from updates, the overall consensus is that the creative, delicious food and kind service make it a worthwhile destination. Good food, decent service but it's on the pricier side. You compare the price at the menu section to their price 2 years ago & they have made really big jump in prices but I am not sure if they have mde big jumps in quality & quantity of the food.

I will say it again, it's good Chinese meal, but a plate of fried rice is 18-25$ plus tax? A steamed oyster (picture attached) is 12$!

On the plus side, they have a very wide selection of dishes & fresh seafood.

The food was good & all the dishes came out around the same time. Unlike a previous reviewer, I did not notice any over saltiness in the food. I'm giving the food rating a 4 star since the taste is more or less the same as their competitors in the area The service is where they should improve. 1) when ordering, the waiter was constantly trying to upsell us. Despite telling her we wanted some simple, she acted like she was getting a sales commission. 2) unlike their nearby competitors, the dishes were served in smaller plates or larger plates that were only 70% full. It was very noticeable & puzzling since the ingredients in our dishes were not expensive. 3) they calculate tips on top of tax. The government is clamping down on this shortly & I hope they stop soon. 4) I asked if they had complementary dessert, they said yes. Minutes later, 1/2 a small bowl of red bean dessert was served & we were all supposed to share it In summary, on the surface, this looks like a family style restaurant, you want to help to be successful. The food was on par but, the portion size could be larger. However, multiple hints of greed & cost cutting erases any nostalgic feeling one might have from eating at a smaller family restaurant.

All the dishes taste okay, but they are a bit on the salty side. The flavors are not as good as what the Google reviews suggest. Probably because there are not many great Cantonese restaurants in Montreal, this place can still survive here. However, if this restaurant were to open in Toronto or the Greater Toronto Area, I think it would struggle to stay in business due to the high competition in the Cantonese restaurant scene in Ontario. The prices here are also relatively high compared to other restaurants. The service is not very good, to be honest. The waitress was quite pushy in recommending seafood dishes, even though we had already said two or three times that we were not ready or weren't interested at the moment. She still insisted on pushing the dishes she wanted us to order. While I do see that this restaurant has quite a few customers, I personally wouldn't come back again, especially since it's quite far from downtown. If I lived nearby, maybe I would, but I wouldn't recommend it as highly as the Google reviews do.

Staff were really nice, but the food did not meet my expectations. Our dishes tasted average & the price was expensive for the small portion size.
