About us

Known as a Montreal institution, Le Taj has been deeply entrenched in the downtown core for over 3 decades.

The decor at Le Taj represents a true synthesis of the complex, the colourful, the simple and the elegant. Carefully curated with handmade wooden carvings from the early 18th century, juxtaposed with the 12-foot mud wall adorning the backdrop of the dining room - which was in fact the central installation from the Indian Pavilion at Expo ‘67 - the decor often leaves our guests speechless while maintaining a certain feeling of warmth that mirrors the cuisine. At the rear end of the restaurant, our tandoor (traditional clay oven) is visible through a glass wall, leaving guests with a window into the world of our chefs, who can be seen cooking tandoori delicacies from fresh naan to our signature tandoori chicken.

Owner, Vinod Kapoor, opened the restaurant in 1985, with the idea of creating a space where Indian food could be devoured within the respected setting it deserved: white table clothes, fine wine and a decor that highlights the rich cultural and artistic history of his native India. Having previously been a collector and dealer of Indian art and antiques, his keen eye for interesting pieces has made its impression on the ambiance of the restaurant, where most of the artwork is one of a kind (including a piece from the Indian Pavilion at Expo ’67!).

It is with this same passion that Mr. Kapoor, who can still be seen buzzing around the dining room on a busy night, continues to maintain the high quality and exceptional service to old and new clients alike. Over the years, Le Taj has become a staple for many Montrealers and international clients, with a number of patrons having grown up dining with us and coming back over time with families of their own. In that respect, our own family of dedicated staff members - many of whom have been with us since the very beginning - are in large part how we have built our reputation of excellence for over 30 years. With a large number of our regular patrons making up a who's who, and having been as loyal to us as we have been to them and to our classical recipes, we hope to continue our journey in the mastery of culinary arts and service for many years to come.

Beautiful ambience & courteous staff. While the food was good it was standard Indian cuisine. We expected creative, delicious dishes, but instead we were served typical versions of tandoori (over seasoned), samosas (reheated) & korma (too much butter). The meal was satisfying, but not exceptional.

One of the worst Indian meals that I've eaten in Montreal. Flavourless boring dishes. What a disappointment.

I am a customer at The Taj most weeks. The quality of the food is alway superb well cooked & week presented plus there is a wide choice of dishes on the menu.
I like my Indian food at the spicy end of the spectrum & so the staff bring me extra chillies to allow me to customize my dishes.

The standard of service is excellent from the moment that you walk in the door with a personal greeting.

I look forward to my next visit in 2020 after the holidays.

Namaste, really had a bad experience at Le Taj will never go there.

Yesterday went out with my friends to eat at Le Taj booked a table for four. My friend had an emergency & he had to go. He ordered in starters Seekh kebab, he told me that the dish that he got was cold. He left at 6:15 pm. I ordered Mutton Korma with Naan & my friend said that lets share it together. The food was super good. Im not complaining about the food but the way they treated us was super harsh. The waiter who was wearing glasses says that no one dish is not enough for one person, you need to order another dish. We said that we will order it after. They were in a hurry & kept saying that they need our table so that others can do the reservation. We asked them that give us the bill & wanted us to leave because we didn't order anything much. In directly they wanted us to leave. They gave us our bills. There was an Indian waiter, I asked him that Le Taj is always full in terms of reservation. He started narrating me the story of Le Taj that it is there for about 45 years & its always busy & occupied. I don't want to listen all of that. What does the story have to do with your pathetic service. The waiter told me that we don't allow people who eat starters & order one dish & thats it. Their meaning is order at least three dishes as per their requirement so that they can make some money in tips. Paid & walked out of the restaurant. Never ever will go to Le Taj again, its not worth it. Food is costly I agree but these waiters don't know how to treat people. Go to any other restaurant in downtown they are so polite & they serve you well, even if you take one dish as per your choice. Well Le Taj behaviour was super bad, felt insulted there. The waiters deserve 1 Rating in terms of treating people. They should put a board outside "Only Rich Allowed not for Poor".

Wouldn't recommend any Indian to every eat there

The food is excellent. Best Indian restaurant i've been to in Montreal so far. The food is savory, fresh & well-executed.You get traditional indian dishes the way they were meant to be enjoyed. If the dish is meant to be spicy, it will be spicy. Le Taj does not take the ''safe for everyone'' route. They are ''all-in'' with traditional dishes. I would definitely suggest taking the Feast. It allwos you to try a little bit of every category from the menu. The price is not overly expensive but it's not inexpensive either. Well worth the price you pay though.

The service was excellent as well. Very welcoming yet professional. A nice balance. Our waiter was very chatty & very nice. The only reason I did not give a 5-star for service is because the waiter forgot my beer.

We will definitely return to Le Taj & will encourage others to try it out!
