About

Known as a Montreal institution, Le Taj has been deeply entrenched in the downtown core for over 3 decades.

The decor at Le Taj represents a true synthesis of the complex, the colourful, the simple and the elegant. Carefully curated with handmade wooden carvings from the early 18th century, juxtaposed with the 12-foot mud wall adorning the backdrop of the dining room - which was in fact the central installation from the Indian Pavilion at Expo ‘67 - the decor often leaves our guests speechless while maintaining a certain feeling of warmth that mirrors the cuisine. At the rear end of the restaurant, our tandoor (traditional clay oven) is visible through a glass wall, leaving guests with a window into the world of our chefs, who can be seen cooking tandoori delicacies from fresh naan to our signature tandoori chicken.

Owner, Vinod Kapoor, opened the restaurant in 1985, with the idea of creating a space where Indian food could be devoured within the respected setting it deserved: white table clothes, fine wine and a decor that highlights the rich cultural and artistic history of his native India. Having previously been a collector and dealer of Indian art and antiques, his keen eye for interesting pieces has made its impression on the ambiance of the restaurant, where most of the artwork is one of a kind (including a piece from the Indian Pavilion at Expo ’67!).

It is with this same passion that Mr. Kapoor, who can still be seen buzzing around the dining room on a busy night, continues to maintain the high quality and exceptional service to old and new clients alike. Over the years, Le Taj has become a staple for many Montrealers and international clients, with a number of patrons having grown up dining with us and coming back over time with families of their own. In that respect, our own family of dedicated staff members - many of whom have been with us since the very beginning - are in large part how we have built our reputation of excellence for over 30 years. With a large number of our regular patrons making up a who's who, and having been as loyal to us as we have been to them and to our classical recipes, we hope to continue our journey in the mastery of culinary arts and service for many years to come.

Me & my wife went for dinner in le Taj on 23rd July, 26 & our experience was too bad bc we went their on very high recommendation & in search of best Indian food in Montreal. I ordered veg soup for my wife & chicken soup for me. To my surprise, their veggie soup was of diluted moongi Ki daal & arhar Ki daal, absolutely no vegetables in it. & the chicken soup which was served to me was purely Sambar which TN people eat. OMG , we never had such soups in our life. Thereafter, the Kadai Paneer contained too much oil, lachha prantha & butter Naan were too hard that they were like wood , we old people could not chew them.
Absolutely I have no grudge, but my submission with folded hands to the management is if they could please look into this & improve these preparations. Thanks.

The food here was exceptional. We ordered the fish amritsari, aloo tikke, & samosas for apps & chicken tikka & fish dish for entrees. The service was also amazing, Sunil was very good, gave excellent recommendations & truly made the experience personable. Thanks Sunil!

I had buffet with some of my students from different cultural backgrounds. They liked the food very much. As I understand the flavour, I'll rank the food 7/10. There should be green chutney accompanying pakoras & samosas & chicken tanduri, there should be no eggs in chicken qourma, kheer must be thicker, the bill must be brought in a folder.

We have been going to Le Taj for years. This dinner was for an anniversary. I really love their chicken Tikka Masala, it is more tangy than the other Indian restaurant. The pulao rice is my favorite. It is so fluffy & tasty. For dessert, you really have to try their kulfi. The service is always welcoming, warm & very professional. I really recommend this restaurant for any special occasion you have, especially if you want it to be memorable.

Great meal in a quiet restaurant. The naan was truly the best I have had & beautiful. One order of naan with one order of rice was perfect for 3 people. We had vegetable korma (rated as the best she'd had by the person who ordered it), saag paneer, & chicken tikka. The chicken was not at all dry-tender & delicious. Tandoori chicken often is dry & this was spectacular. We also enjoyed the cucumber tomato salad, shared among three of us.

i love their chicken tikka masala, & have eaten it at multiple locations & it ALWAYS comes with a side of rice (how else are u meant to eat it??). i ordered it on doordash, first time getting their food delivered, & for the EXACT same price of 30$ i received it without the side of rice. i called thinking its a mistake but apparently'they don't give the side of rice for takeout'… but they charge the exact same price (already overpriced)? it makes no sense.
