Paris may be an ocean away, but the art of casual French bistro dining is not lost at Le Pois Penché in the heart of downtown Montréal.
The menu reads like a who’s-who of Parisian comfort food favourites, with beloved classics the likes of steak tartare and duck confit in mustard sauce alongside an array of spectacular seafood platters. Boasting one of the most interesting wine collections in the city, Le Pois Penché offers an impressive selection of imported bottles and wines by the glass.
This authentic French brasserie delivers fine cuisine in simple opulence: plush red velvet, checkerboard floor tile, crystal chandeliers, large paintings and a blackboard listing the daily specials on the wall. In the middle, a large bar; around it, busy waiters flitting to and from, outfitted in the traditional white shirt, black vest and apron. French bistro, through and through.
Le Pois Penché’s terrasse buzzes with animated conversation while its private banquet rooms reserve their splendour for group functions. Le Cellier, in particular, offers a sumptuous venue for events up to 70 guests, with vibrant Parisian settings by artist Pierre Pivet, a vaulted brick ceiling, and the restaurant’s prized wine cellars displayed behind sleek glass panels. Connected to the brasserie, Salon Chez Swann, in the boutique hotel of the same name, is ideal for groups of 24 guests or less.

If you do, you have the chance of being seated near a male customer who will not take "no" for an answer. He is apparently a daily regular & the staff seem to tolerate him well, but I ended up being cornered in a very awkward conversation. When he started saying racist things about his Mexican-American in-laws, I begged for the bill & left behind an expensive glass of wine & half-eaten dinner. The food was very fine, but my memory of this place will always be how uncomfortable I was made to feel while I was there.View more
Fantastic service & delicious French onion soup! Cool vibe & hot spot to check out.View more
Weekend branch menu is boring. The seafood was done badly, had mussels which were cooked unevenly. Some mussels were well done, half were raw. The sauce was like water, boring & plain. The fries were burned. Was amazed by the waiter who was standing & staring how much I would tip. After the paying he silently walked away, I guess my tip was not enough. No goodbyes or anything, oh well.View more

Beautiful restaurant with quality food although even with a reservation two weeks in advance we were seated next to the kitchen which was loud & very hot. Disappointed in the managers response to reseat us. Be careful not to be seated by the kitchen.View more

As we arrived in Montreal, some places didn't allow us to get a seat with the child because they got a business or alcohol permit as a bar but actually run as a restaurant.
This place welcomed us even though we didn't have a formal dress.
Raw bar looked amazing. Live music was fantastic. People sang shangsongs all together. Ordered chef's day special grilled fish, the manager came with a cart that has grilled fish on, then got us all the meats from the bones.
This place was the best place I ever visited in Montreal rather than tourist hot spots.
Made us so happy from the long drive.View more
Everything about this place was excellent. The hostess was very polite & accommodating given we had two little children & a large stroller & gave us a perfect table. Our waiter was funny & friendly. The manager, Omar, was exceptionally welcoming & helpful. Most importantly the food was excellent & it is a really cool little bistro that we felt as if we were in downtown Paris. Highly recommended!View more
