Short review: Great Gelato. Service may be hit or completely miss. Our experience, while on vacation, has turned us off the establishment.
Full Review: We've known about this gelato place since our friends moved to St Lazare in 2018. They've hosted us many times over the years & always treated us to gelato from here. It has always been amazing. I have severe nut allergies, & they've always managed to bring back great flavours for me to enjoy, so we've had many good experiences with the gelato itself.
This was our first time actually coming here ourselves. We vacationed from Toronto.
We're middle-aged, & honestly, everywhere we've gone in St Lazare, people, Francophone & Anglophones alike, have been so friendly & welcoming.
Unfortunately, our experience here was different.
We saw the owner, an older gentleman, speaking with a young woman (brunette) who was at the cash preparing a milkshake. Another young woman (blonde) came out, & we greeted her with a smile & a'Hi, how are you?' We got a'Fine' back, with no smile or warmth.
I asked,'Are there nuts in most of your flavours?'
'Yeah.'
'Okay, which ones?'
'A lot of them.'
I said,'Sorry, it's our first time here. Let me ask another way. Which ones don't have nuts?'
She pointed to the signs, which were all in French, & basically said,'Whatever is there.'
No suggestions, no help, nothing. Just a blank expression that gave us the feeling of'get on with it.'
At that point, I was irritated, but we remained completely calm & polite. We asked if they had vanilla or chocolate. She said'French vanilla,' so we ordered two large ones.
When they came out, one was literally about twice the size of the other. The brunette young woman cashed us out & was much friendlier & had a completely different energy.
The gelato itself? Still amazing. The price is on par with what we pay in Toronto. The location is central in the small town, there's parking, & there's outdoor seating.
Would we go back? No.
Would I recommend it? Probably not. & that's unfortunate, because the gelato really is excellent. But service & the people are a big part of what makes you want to return to a business.
If I did recommend it, I'd probably say: the gelato is great, but you may or may not have a great experience with the service. Or send someone else to pick it up for you.
It's a shame because we've enjoyed this gelato for years when our friends brought it to us. This was our first time going ourselves, & unfortunately, the experience left us not wanting to return.
I am very disappointed with my experience here today as I used to go often . I understand prices everywhere have gone up but my opinion a small frozen yogurt at $9.75 is a bit ridiculous.Sadly I will not be returning..
The quality is consistently excellent, the portions are generous, & the staff are always friendly & welcoming. Whether you're stopping by on a hot summer day or treating the family after dinner, the experience never disappoints. The atmosphere is fun, local, & full of community spirit.
