Lafayette is a gem hidden in plain sight. If you ever trudged out of the Papineau metro station toward your end goal, you might ignore this quaint small place parked right across the station on Ste-Catherine street.
Unassuming, without any frills keeping & the straightforward dinner look of the early 80's, Lafayette is nothing to be wowed at in an era of overly decorated experience based restaurants where food almost comes second to what you are living in the buidling.
The atmosphere is brought by one of the warmest waitstaff found in the business. They feel proud of working there & will proudly guide you through the plethora of items found on the menu. Here, the food is king & the experience? Having the pleasure to eat it.
Don't be lured by the French name of a well know American revolutionary, the specialties here are all about the Greek food. Whether you are salivating over a Greek kebab or delicious calamari, they have you covered with more than generous portions for the price of entry paid.
Being 3 beers in, after a rather fun work party, I settled on a Quebec classic with a poutine with cut hot dogs. While they tout their Greek food might be amazing, their poutine is an immaculate & intricate symphony of taste that would rival legends found on the side of rural highways of the province. A gravy made from scratch with a distinct taste of cinnamon & vegetable. Here nothing is used from a can & everything is made the same day. This amazing sauce is coating perfectly fried red potato fries with fresh cheese curds. The result erased any potential hangovers that was lurching over me & left me cleaning a plate without even feeling bad about the insane caloric intake I might've taken.
It's not complicated to understand why Lafayette has been an institution to Le Village borough for 50 years, it's food & wait staff & straigforward atmosphere are a cut above the loud & overly elaborate restaurant culture that has become pervasive in the Montreal landscape.
Wheter you are hankering for a quick bite between destinations or want to curb your need for delicious foods, Lafayette is the place you need to stop at.
I am an Indian & I don't eat beef & it was my first time visiting this place... The staff was very welcoming & helped me through the order since the menu is in French & I don't know French... I don't eat beef so...they helped me order the right thing...I eat the poutine where the sauce was made of chicken & it was delicious!! Loved it
Not the worst nor the best restaurant in town. The place has nice booths, wheelchair accessible although The waitress sounded rude & cranky about assisting customers with a visual impairment. I understand she was the only one going around taking orders & serving but gees!! Not to mention there was a piece of paper in my plate of food, specifically in the tzatziki sauce. Other than that, the chicken brochette, fries, rice & salad were delicious!
Agréable Surprise! Ambiance Chaleureuse, on se sent chez soi. Service impeccable & amicale. Clientèle Adorale! Étonnant Frites Sauce, un des meilleurs en ville! L'Essayer c'est l'adopter!
