Review Summary

Hwang Kum is described as a cozy, small, family-owned Korean spot that locals often return to with friends and family. Strong praise centers on jokbal, pajeon especially the seafood pajeon, and a variety of noodles, along with bulgogi, samgyetang, tteokbokki and a generous pork bone soup, all said to be prepared fresh with distinct flavors and textures and to be complemented by tasty banchan and sauces. The dining experience is described as small and sometimes busy, with lines common and street parking usually available, and hours can vary so checking Google for open days is advised. While prices can be on the higher side, the quality, generous portions, and friendly, speedy service consistently earn high recommendations, with some reviewers calling it the best Korean food in Montreal.

It’s a humble spot with exceptional food. I’m a vegetarian but was with non-veg & we ate to our hearts desires. They were accommodating & made the seafood pancake without seafood & it was so delicious.
They start you with tea as you sit with continuous refills. It’s a small space maybe 12 tables or so & one wait staff arrive early order first otherwise it gets busy but you sympathize because everyone came practically at opening. We were three table & witchin 10 minutes they were packed all proper signs of being in the right place!

One of the best Korean pancakes in town. Really recommend. The price is a bit higher than average Korean restaurant. The large soup/ stew is good for two people with just the right amount of food. The side dishes are tasty, especially the cucumber 🥒.

Nice to have samgyetang in Montreal. Ginseng chicken soup is a signature dish of Korean. Not every restaurant has such ingredients. Here is a good place

I like this restaurant but hadn't been here n a few years so I was happy to see it still survived in an arae of Montreal that has seen happier days. This is not a place you sit & linger, you order eat & rush out...so my ratings are based on that style of restaurant.

The prices are more than reasonable for the quality & quantity of food served.

The room is literally unchanged & the menu from what I recall was a similar.

I am a fan of asian food buthave had resrvations about Korean food without really knowing why.

But one thing for sure is you want a seafood omlette/crepe this is the place. Nowhere else in Montreal is t as tasty or crunchy.

I also ordered the mandu which were acceptable & the korean version of a sushi roll that was also acceptable.

Service was good but rushed

If i crave Korean food while in Montreal, Hwang-Kum is my one & only place, with no other contending equal. Homey ambiance, authentic cuisine, down-to-earth service, what a find! The only downside is that it has unpredictable vacation schedules!!! It has happened to me numerous times to show up only to find a hand written sign on the door advising that the restaurant is closed... I can certainly sympathize as it is a family-owned restaurant after all, & vacations are well deserved! But selfishly, i wish it was always open, & could take reservations!

I love this place, it is tiny & fills up fast, so be there when it opens (but check their hours cause they're not open every day). I have very little experience with Korean food so I can't tell you if it's authentic but it is definitely delicious! I think it is best if you go with several people & share because everything is great & it's fun to try the different dishes. Get the seafood pancake, it's AMAZING but you need at least 3 people to help you eat it because it is so large & fried. The wait staff is very friendly (but busy) however we never had to wait long for anything. They serve this really great corn & barley tea & the waitress was super nice when we asked what it was & what kind of hot sauce they used (so we could buy both of them at the korean grocery store down the street). If you're up for a culinary adventure, I definitely recommend Hwang-Kum!

Took my dad here for lunch since he never had Korean before. He left feeling very satisified. Said that the food was like a home cooked meal & he would definitly eat there again. He is a hard guy to please. He ordered the lunch special spicy chicken & I had my usual bi-bim-bap. We love the kim-chee they serve at the beginning. Have been there so many times already, there is nothing to complain about.

Good stuff, I haven't been to a lot of Korean restos in the city but this one was up there. Fresh ingredients, great taste. Beef Bulgogi was perfectly done, the other chicken dish we tried (I forget the name) was a bit too sweet.
