Review Summary

Hwang Kum is widely celebrated for serving authentic and delicious Korean comfort food, with the seafood pancake consistently highlighted as the best in the city for its perfect crisp texture and flavor. Patrons appreciate the high quality of dishes like the beef ribs, bibimbap, and various noodle options, all served with excellent side dishes in a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. While the restaurant space is intimate and often requires waiting in line due to its popularity, the fresh preparation and flavorful meals make it a highly recommended destination for those seeking a genuine dining experience. Checking the operating hours ahead of time is advised given their variable schedule, but the fantastic food and courteous service ensure that visiting this local favorite is well worth the effort.

Great classic Korean restaurant! Best seafood pancake in the city!

The food was absolutely delicious! Best Korean seafood pancake I've ever had. It was so fluffy, flavourful & crispy. The sauce it came with made it so much better. We also ordered the large pork bone soup, it was a very generous portion. My only critique would be the potatoes had an interesting texture to them that had me wondering if they were previously frozen.

One of the best Korean places I have been to, loved everything we ordered, it's a bit on expensive side, expect a bill of 70-80 for 2 for a decent meal.

Highly recommended it.

There's something cool about a place so exclusive it only opens periodically & doesn't take reservations. Show up just before it opens & hopefully you get a seat. Delicious Korean food, including an amazing seafood pancake. I love the little art pieces in the restaurant too.

This restaurant is so underrated! Everything I've had here has been delicious. If you haven't been, I highly recommend getting the Haemul (Seafood) Pajeon & the Galbi beef ribs (I like it better than the L. A. Galbi). Their Mandu are good. Simple, warm & comforting. The Dak bulgogi (spicy marinated chicken) is good, if you prefer a saucier/curry like dish. The Sundubu jigae is solid & I would order it again (but I'm also trying to get a different soup every time because they are all so good). I've also tried their spicy bred & vegetable soup, the pork rib soup is great, & I really loved their spicy cod soup. I've also had the bibimbap & it's very good. The cold bibimbab (salmon bowl) & it's fresh & delicious! I wish they were open for lunch because I would order this again! I would skip the Jokbal. It's good, but I prefer the one from the Montreal Korean & Japanese Foods (grocery store on Sherbrooke st. West). Overall, I love this place! The portions are good, the food is tasty, & satisfying. It's one of the only restaurants that, even if I eat a lot, I don't feel bloated there day after eating here (another sign that they are using excellent ingredients). Call before going, however, because they are a small business, their hours vary (& sometimes they are closed 🥲).
