About us

The spice road in Old Montreal

Step into Restaurant Gandhi and the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal give way to the fragrant spices and the aromatic flavours of the Asian subcontinent. Traditional Indian music plays as you dine, providing a gentle serenade to accompany your meal.

Unlike most indian restaurants, you will feel like you're dining al fresco: soft light, bistro-style tables with crisp white lines, and the yellow walls with their window-like cubby holes recall a sunset over the Ganges half a world away. Gandhi engages all five senses to create a memorable dining experience. For those who prefer a take out, our team will be please to prepare your meal with the same touch of love!

Review Summary

Gandhi offers a warm, inviting Indian dining experience with aromatic, well-balanced dishes that showcase generous portions of tandoori specialties, butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer, and biryani. The naan, especially garlic naan, is often praised as outstanding, with papadam and chutneys as a memorable start. The service is consistently attentive and friendly, with staff going the extra mile to ensure guests feel at home. The ambiance ranges from a calm, refined Old Montreal setting to a cozy, bustling vibe, with tasteful decor and comfortable linens. The vegetarian options are plentiful and delicious, and halal choices are noted. Some comments mention value for money and occasional longer waits during peak hours, but the overall sentiment highlights bold flavors, authenticity, and care in presentation. Frequent visitors describe Gandhi as a reliable favorite for family meals, celebrations, and casual dinners alike, with butter chicken and richly spiced curries inviting repeat visits.

Belle grande salle bien éclairée, service attentionné & plats aussi savoureux que généreux. Mais faut pas habiter les bidonvilles de Delhi pour manger là $$$.

I got the beef bariyani & garlic naan. It was so good, it really quenched my soul. The service was a bit slow, waiting for the menu a bit & to put the order in. But once the food came I was a happy duck A great meal for the evening

Slowest service you can imagine. Manager & Waiter kept catering to one customer. Didn't had enough staff. Taste of food was bland but it can be due to connection to Gandhi/Gujarat. Prices are expensive but probably due to the location. Hope they hire more help & get their service better.

I am very much a fan of this restaurant as I am fond of their butter chicken. The recipe is sweet & has a subtle coconutty note. It is not spicy at all, which some may not like but offers a unique opportunity for others. Eat in or order out infrequently, would recommend. First visit was 6 years ago & quality hasn't swayed.

Favourite Indian restaurant when visiting Montreal. Fabulous location, atmosphere is really great. Always busy, which is a good sign. The food is terrific & the waiters are knowledgable. If you like very spicy food they can accommodate.

Toujours un plaisir de venir manger chez Ghandi. Notre restaurant indien préféré.

Still excellent service but still lacks ambiance. The dining room is still unsettlingly cold & the sound system is still completely inaudible. Flavour points were underwhelming across the board. The only vegetable in the korma aside from beans & onion were sad little chunks of potato. I could elaborate about the floury bhaji & chalky paneer but on a positive note: The chicken tikka was passable with a nice smokiness to it. Montreal is a great city for Indian cuisine but you'll have to journey out of Old Montreal to actually get some.
