You know how sometimes you eat a restaurant while traveling & then dream about going back? This is the place. We were here seven years ago, & have been dreaming about coming back since. We went out of our way to travel here again, & were not disappointed in the least!
The food is phenomenal. We had the fish masala & the Chicken Tandoori this time. Both were outstanding.
The restaurant is comfortable & clean.
I hope we won't have to wait another seven years to come again!
If you plan to visit Gandhi, make sure you have a lot of patience - especially on weekends. Waiting for food can easily take up to an hour, so be prepared.
Now coming to the food, the portion sizes are quite small compared to the price. Whether it's a veg or non-veg curry, it's barely enough for one person. We tried Shahi Paneer, Madras Chicken, Chana Masala, & Chicken Biryani.
Taste-wise, the best dish was definitely the Chicken Biryani - flavorful, spicy, & satisfying for someone who enjoys authentic Indian spice levels. The Madras Chicken was also decent. However, both vegetarian curries were below average. Especially the Chana Masala - the way they prepare it, it feels more like something that should be served as an appetizer, not a main course. The Shahi Paneer also had a slight sourness that didn't taste right.
As for the breads, the Tandoori Roti turned hard like papad within minutes, but the Naan was soft & good.
I understand it's a fine-dine restaurant in downtown Montreal, but honestly, the price doesn't justify the quantity or the quality. They really need to work on their flavors & consistency.
Pretty crap food & it takes some skill to make a butter chicken so dry & tasteless that it seems the gravy was mostly colour & no flavours.
We flew in from Washington State today & didn't know where to eat. We passed Gandhi on the street & had to go in. The food was so good & the staff were so friendly. My Mom loved the Tandoori chicken, my Dad loved the butter chicken, & I enjoyed my samosas. We were so happy we stopped in!
A hidden gem in Montreal!
If you're craving Indian food that doesn't hold back on spice or flavor, Ghandi is the spot. I've eaten my fair share of curries, but this was hands down the hottest, spiciest, & most delicious I've ever had. The depth of flavor in each dish was incredible-rich, smoky, perfectly balanced heat that keeps you going back for more (even while breaking a sweat!).
The chicken curry we had, Madras & another specialty, were unforgettable-tender, generously portioned, & swimming in a sauce so bold it demanded every grain of basmati rice to soak it up. The samosas were crisp & golden, filled with spiced potato goodness, & paired beautifully with their chutneys. Everything felt authentic, prepared with care, & served with a warm hospitality that made the experience even better.
Ghandi may be a bit tucked away, but it deserves a spotlight. If you love Indian food-or you think you can handle spice-this is a must-visit in Montreal.
Visiting from USA. Great butter chicken & very good atmosphere. We liked it.
All the servers were so kind & helpful, they were very attentive to our needs. Our server Rafiqula was very kind to us as well. The service was also very quick, I appreciated how our water would be filled up by the servers quite often too. I would recommend the butter chicken with the regular naan as it was my favourite!
Visiting from the USA & wanted to try different foods in Canada. By far, this Indian Restaurant was the best. Atmosphere was welcoming. My family ordered Naan, Agneu Tikka, Buttered Chicken, Agneu Korahi & Shrimp Malai. Food was excellent!! Flavors were there & loved every bite. Sauces for each dish were excellent. I would definitely come back if we visit again. Highly recommended!
We are vacationing in Montreal. By far the best meal we have had while we were here. We had the most delicious curry lamb we have ever tasted- it has a perfect blend of spicy & sweet. We ordered an appetizer of an assortment of tandoori chicken, & many other wonderful taste treats. Truly amazing! I only wish this restaurant was close by! Highly recommend Gandhi!
We loved our meal & the ambience at this Indian restaurant we decided to have dinner at, in downtown Montreal! The restaurant filled up really fast, but because we arrived early, managed to get a table without a reservation. We had flown in from California & our son from England to be in Montreal, & this was a perfect place to enjoy a conversation. The wait staff was very attentive, the food & wine was excellent, & the decor & table settings were very appealing to the eye. I found the tandoori roti, the daal fry & the palak paneer to be delicious, & the chicken dishes (which I don't eat) were enjoyed by others - we found it hard to stop eating actually, so decided not to have dessert :) I'll be recommending this restaurant to all my friends too.
Best butter chicken in town, not spicy like the other ones & still sooo rich in flavou
Was a little apprehensive after seeing the google score, but I had heard good things so wanted to try for myself. The owner & staff were extremely accommodating from moment we showed up. I have two young children, one in a stroller who leaves more food on the floor than in her mouth, so we aren't exactly your perfect guests. However, we were warmly welcomed without issue, very family friendly. The restaurant was extremely clean, staff were professional & helpful & the food was delicious. It was a little on the sweet side, however that just made my kids eat more of it, they loved it! We had the butter chicken & tiki masala. We will definitely be back next time were in old montreal!
Absolutely loved my experience at Restaurant Gandhi! The butter chicken & rice were outstanding; rich in flavor with a perfect, creamy texture. The atmosphere was lovely & inviting, & the service was just as warm & attentive. Highly recommend!
Outstanding Indian food. One of our favorite restaurants in Montreal, we eat here whenever we visit from New York. Some of the best tandoori chicken anywhere, they also do a delicious chicken tikka masala. The cheese naan was also the best we have had. Friendly & attentive staff.
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Gandhi Restaurant in Montreal's Old Port, & it was a truly memorable experience-especially since I brought my little cousins along, & it was their first time trying Indian cuisine. The restaurant offers a perfect blend of traditional Indian flavors with the charming atmosphere of the Old Port, making it ideal for both casual dining & special occasions.
From the moment we stepped inside, we were greeted by an inviting, warm ambiance that made us feel right at home. It felt like the kind of place where you could enjoy a comforting meal or celebrate a special moment, & it definitely added to the overall experience.
I started my meal with a crisp glass of Chardonnay, which was the perfect companion to the rich & aromatic spices that followed. To kick things off, we tried the Papadam-an irresistible, crispy lentil wafer served with three vibrant sauces: mint, tamarind, & mango chutney. Each sauce offered a unique balance of tangy sweetness that elevated the papadam, making it a delightful palate cleanser that melted in my mouth with every bite.
For appetizers, I went with a selection of traditional favorites, & each dish was nothing short of fantastic. The Chicken Tikka was tender, with a smoky, roasted flavor, & the marinated chicken was seasoned to perfection. The Onion Bhajee, fried in Indian butter, was crispy & rich, with just the right touch of sweetness from the onions. The Samosa had a flavorful vegetable filling, & the Pakora-seasoned vegetable fritters-was crunchy on the outside & soft on the inside, with a well-balanced spice profile.
When it came time for the main course, I decided to let the waiter surprise me with a variety of dishes to truly experience the diversity of Indian cuisine. The Mixed Vegetable Bhajee was a refreshing, light vegetarian dish with a wonderful combination of fresh vegetables & a perfect mix of spices. The Chicken Tikka Masala, a classic favorite, was comforting & creamy, with perfectly cooked chicken bathed in a rich, flavorful sauce.
However, it was the Shrimp Bhuna & Lamb Dhansak that truly left an impression. The Shrimp Bhuna had a subtle, yet satisfying heat, with shrimp cooked to perfection in a rich curry sauce full of layers of flavor. But the Lamb Dhansak… wow. That dish was the real standout for me. The lamb was so tender it practically melted in my mouth, & the curry itself had a perfect balance of sweetness & tanginess, with lentils & spices providing depth without overwhelming the palate.
What made this experience even more special was seeing my cousins-who were trying Indian food for the first time-so excited by the new flavors. Gandhi Restaurant not only gave us a chance to explore incredible dishes, but it also made us feel like we were sharing something truly special together.
Overall, Gandhi Restaurant delivers an exceptional dining experience, with high-quality food, attentive service, & authentic flavors. The balance of heat, sweetness, & richness in every dish is remarkable. Whether you're a seasoned lover of Indian cuisine or someone new to it (like my cousins), this restaurant offers a fantastic opportunity to dive into the vibrant world of Indian food in such an inviting setting.

Had an amazing experience at Gandhi! The butter chicken & chicken tikka masala were rich, flavorful, & perfectly spiced. The naan was warm, soft, & paired beautifully with the delicious dipping sauce. To top it off, the Kingfisher beer was a refreshing complement to the meal. The service was exceptionally friendly & impressively quick, making the entire experience even better. Highly recommend for a great Indian dining experience in Montreal.
One of the most over-priced & disappointing Indian restaurant I have been in a long time. The vegetable Biryani was just plain rice with peas, absolutely no aroma whatsoever!
The chicken Karahi was a catastrophy! They should visit Karahi Boys in Toronto to know what it should look & taste like.
Small portions, tasteless & flavorless food. The only good thing was that everything was at least hot.
& then was the Aloo Matar, it was acceptable at best.
Wouldn't recommend to anyone looking for authentic South Asian cuisine.
