These reviews present Décarie Hot Dog as a nostalgic Montreal staple known for its classic steamies, hot dogs, fries, and poutine, with many readers calling it the best or an iconic stop that keeps delivering comfort and memories for generations, even as some note a decline in sauce richness, crunch, and overall consistency in recent visits. While longtime fans celebrate its history and affordability, others mention occasional lapses in cleanliness, service mood, and the cash only policy, and a few ask for a return to the previous poutine sauce and classic texture. Overall, Décarie Hot Dog remains a beloved, imperfect institution that still draws people back for the signature steamies, hearty fries, and poutine, with nostalgia carrying more weight than novelty.
This is a classic joint in Montreal, but it got way worse. Ordered takeout & didn't leave a tip & the cook complained right in front of us. Good thing we didn't tip, the food was bland & soggy. Never going back to this once great establishment.

I used to absolutely love Decarie Hot Dog. It was one of those go to spots I'd recommend without hesitation, especially for a classic poutine & hot dog. Unfortunately, over time, the quality has really started to drop, & my most recent visit was genuinely disappointing.
I ordered a poutine, & right away it was clear something was off. There simply wasn't enough sauce, which made the fries incredibly dry honestly, it was almost shocking. A good poutine should be rich, saucy, & comforting, but this one missed the mark completely. The fries themselves weren't great either; they lacked the crispness & freshness I used to expect from this place.
The hot dog was another letdown. It barely had the condiments I specifically asked for, which took away from the overall experience. When you order something so simple, the basics really matter, & unfortunately, those details were overlooked.
What makes this experience especially sad is that Decarie Hot Dog is such an iconic spot. It's the kind of place that holds a lot of nostalgia for many people, myself included. Seeing the quality drop this much is disappointing, because it used to be so consistently good.
I really hope this was just an off day & not the new normal. I'd love to see this place return to the level it once had, because it truly deserves its reputation. Right now, though, the experience didn't live up to what it used to be.
It's the classic Decarue hot dog that I've loved all the way since I was a kid. Still cash only & the steamés are The classic luster perfection. Get them all dressed as they have to be made, get some fries & you've got nostalgic perfection. Every time I'm in Montreal, I make it a point to stop by there. Even if it's way out of the way & I have to fight through the expressway. Still worth it.
A true Montreal classic, hasn't changed in over 40 years (I used to go there in the 70s). Same food, same place, slightly higher prices, but that's to be expected.

Like other decades old community/city/local establishments, Decarie Hot dog has been serving audiences of every background possible from age to ethnicity to wealth to education. - almost everyone has heard of this place or eaten there as an institution bar none. The old Montreal pool room is a competitor but geographically they are so far apart they don't really compete, however I believe that the atmosphere & food quality is far superior. This had been a family owned & run business that feels like a family environment from day one. Its owners Nick & his son (Kawasaki) Tommy have delighted its patrons in a warm, friendly & inviting manner with humour & great conversation - it's like the bar Cheers on TV equivalent. Must eats, of course, the Montreal steamed hot dog & the Montreal classic way is mustard & coleslaw. Fries are fantastic & fresh cut & twice fried & of course poutine is amazing as it's the burger & other items including breakfasts. So go & have an affordable but & get to know the staff as they are excellent human beings.

Tiny place, hardly any seats, tiny counter for dine-in customers. A true throw-back with old school charm of a Montreal classic. Best steamie hot dogs. A mainstay of Ville Saint-Laurent.
