In 1861, Thomas Wilson first established its hardware store at 400 Place Jacques Cartier and for over 155 years, this building stood at the very heart of the Old Montreal. In 1970, the iconic French restaurant Chez Queux moved in and would remain there for well over 40 years.
Today it is our turn to leave our mark on this legendary Montreal building. We welcome all who come by, providing food the way we like it, simple, fresh and delicious. After a long day of sightseeing or while on a break from your bicycle ride in the Old Port, drop by Comptoir 400, we are always happy too see (and feed) you!
Comptoir 400 comes across as a lively Old Port spot with a pleasant terrace and a mix of solid dishes and variable service, where reviewers praise the location, atmosphere and flavors in items like mussels, poutine, pizza, burgers and fish, while noting that portions and prices can be inconsistent and some dishes arrive cold or underseasoned. The menu spans seafood, mains and shareables, with several mentions of bruschetta, salads and the arugula pizza as standouts, though a few experiences describe slower service, slow drink refills and uneven attention from staff. The ambiance is repeatedly described as warm and welcoming, making it a good casual option for families, groups or a relaxed dinner, especially outdoors, but timing can suffer during peak hours and some visits feel rushed. Overall, Comptoir 400 is seen as a worthwhile stop for a tasty, location-driven meal with friendly service, yet guests should temper expectations about consistency across visits.
We were seated outside, very fast might I add. The service was good. They didn't come see us often, but when they did, they made sure we were good. Their mojito mocktail wasn't good. It was tasteless. I've tasted mocktail mojitos & some of them were very good. This one was not.
I had lunch with my spouse, nice location & service. The food was fine, we had a cheeseburger & a Swiss cheese crepe with aperol limocello & a red Ireland beer, all tasted good & the price was a little high but acceptable for the tourism area.
We stopped by Comptoir 400 for a casual dinner & enjoyed a delicious large pizza & fresh salad. The flavors were great, & the ingredients tasted high quality. The setting is cozy & modern-ideal for a quick, satisfying meal.
Service was friendly, but a bit rushed. We asked to have the salad first & the pizza after a short break, but both arrived at the same time. Also, the drink selection is fairly limited, which might be a downside for some.
Still, the food quality & overall vibe make this spot worth a visit. Just a bit more attention to pacing & service details would make it a five-star experience.
Fair price & delicious food! I highly recommend sitting outdoors. It took awhile to get a table due to inattentive employees but once I was seated, I had a great experience! Fantastic location!
On m'a chargé 26 $ pour un plat annoncé à 23 $. L'entrée a été servi en même temps que le repas principal. Il était très difficile d'attirer l'attention du serveur pour avoir du service (eau, addition etc.)
July 2025: Unfortunately, I have to update my 5-star review from 2023 to 2-stars for this restaurant. The food quality has dropped, the portion sizes have reduced substantially & are way too small for the price, & overall I would not visit again after this experience.
My review in Dec 2023: Amazing pizzas & a lovely staff!

Well located in the heart of old Montreal. Service is quick & food ok. Do not expect a fancy meal there but it seems better than the other restaurants around the area. We had the bruschetta, salmon salad & some fries on top.
Not much space between the tables outside & the bar inside looks very nice!
🍕✨ Culinary dreams come true in the heart of Vieux-Montréal! At the iconic Comptoir 400, we indulged in the best of both worlds - the rich, earthy Suprême de Poulet à la Forestière & the flavour-packed Pizza Végétarienne loaded with fresh, local ingredients.
From rustic charm to gourmet bites, every plate is a love letter to French-Québécois flair. A must-visit for foodies craving authenticity & elegance in every bite! 🧀🍄🥬🍗🍷
This used to be a great & affordable spot in the Old Port, but things have definitely changed. They used to offer a large pizza, perfect for sharing in groups, but that's no longer on the menu. Now you're limited to small, average-tasting pizzas that cost over $20, which might make sense if the flavour were truly Italian, but unfortunately, that's not the case. Let's be honest: this place was never known for the best pizza in town, but it stood out thanks to the generous portions & great location. That said, if you've been before & were planning to return for the large pizza, don't bother, you'll likely end up wasting your time & money, just like my friends & I did. See photos for reference.
Very nice atmosphere on the patio to the avenue. Staff was very slow. We enjoyed our time on the patio but service was scarce. My wife left the table to ask for our bill so we could leave. We would have stayed longer but we just got terrible service.
