Review Summary

Reviews consistently describe Chez Alexandre et fils as a Montreal institution with a warm, classic French bistro vibe, where the food is reliably delicious from beef bourguignon and steak frites to seafood and comforting favourites. The service is attentive and professional, and the atmosphere feels both refined and welcoming, with a notable upstairs cigar lounge and a strong wine list that guests frequently enjoy. The spot is praised for charm, consistency, and great experiences for celebrations as well as casual dinners, though a few notes about pacing or value appear from time to time. Overall it comes across as a beloved and dependable destination worth returning to.

A cute restaurant with a Parisien feel. Had the brunch combo which was an amazing deal for 39$. Comes with a coffee, a starter, a main & dessert. The bone marrow was so delicious. Our server Emilie was also very sweet ❤?

The service was slow despite the place being almost empty. We ordered 4 different meals, no one of us was satisfied. The food was below average. Disappointing experience.

Best risoto in town & it feels like an hour in holidays from work. The starters are all fantabulous especially the cod carppacio...
Just thank me after your visit

Great location! Good food. Our server Tristan checked every box. Comfy & lively outdoor seating for dining. A few minutes walk to the sightseeing tour bus if thats your thing. Would definitely return for the food & service.

The restaurant was just getting started because we arrived at 630 on a Saturday. By 830 it was humming. The service was great & our food was delightful, tasty & well presented.

I was there for brunch with my cousin & her family Aug 9. We were charged $30 each for a mimosa. I asked the waitress & she said that was the price. I checked the menu when I got home & the listed price for mimosa is $16. I emailed the restaurant & still have not received a response. Thank God we switched to sangria after the first mimosas! Aside from this, the food was good, as usual, but I don't think I'll return for a while. Her nonchalant response when I questioned the price, & lack of response from the resto is not great.

It was early Saturday evening, July 26, 2025, when my friends & I decided to try someplace new for dinner. We found ourselves looking over the terrace menu of Chez Alexander Restaurant at 1454 Peel Street in Montreal, & agreed to dine here.

A young man named Tarek greeted us & with menus in hand, escorted us to our table. We started off the evening with drinks that were not listed on the menu but Tarek advised they can be prepared nonetheless. Moments later, Tarek returned with our drinks & a small bowl of complimentary black olives to have with our drinks. We asked for bread, & Tarek said he would get some for us. The bread we were served resembled a mini baguette, was cut into two pieces with each individual piece having been cut midway through into three separate pieces which led you to either use your knife to slice off your piece, or use your hands & tear the piece apart.

When we were ready to order our main meals, Tarek placed our orders, but they were served by a different waiter - Daniel. One of my friends had the Cassoulet Toulousain at $39, which he was not overly impressed with, rating it with a simple okay. My other friend had the Shrimp & Scallops Risotto at $34, & said the risotto was not cooked. I had the Sirloin Angus AAA at $49 which came only with a side of French fries. When I inquired about Pepper Sauce, I was told it was an extra & would cost an additional eight dollars. I passed on the Pepper Sauce. The steak was cooked as requested, but it was small & had too much fat on it. I really did not enjoy it.

Meanwhile, throughout our meals, we were sitting there with empty glasses, & no one came to us to ask if we wanted anything else to drink. We ran out of water, & as we looked around to ask for a second bottle of water, no one was insight.

After finishing our meals, the empty plates just laid there for the longest time. Once again, we could not find anyone to ask for the cheques. We did see Daniel come out from the back & go sit outside, my guess to serve the people on the terrasse, but what about the people inside the restaurant like us? He finally noticed us, & walked over to clear away the plates. Daniel didn't offer us coffee or ask whether we wanted anything else, so we asked for three cheques. Again, it was another waiting game, in fact I had to get up & go tell him we wanted the cheques. While waiting, there was a verbal argument between two staff members which we could clearly hear, & found to be very distasteful on the establishment's behalf.

We left the restaurant around 19:35, & very much doubt we will be going back to Chez Alexander again.

I went to Chez Alexandre for dinner & also revisited the hidden cigar lounge on the second floor, one of Montreal's best kept secrets if you're into cigars. It's been a while since I'd been, & while the space is a bit aged, it has a lot of character & history. You can bring your own cigar, & it's usually quiet during the week, which makes it a great spot to unwind. I highly recommend ordering an Americano with a shot of Baileys on the side, plus two sugar cubes. It's a simple pleasure that fits the vibe perfectly.

The food downstairs was average, but the service was good. & don't miss the photo wall on the main floor. It's packed with Montreal history & old-school charm. Fun fact for those who remember, the club next door used to be the iconic Funky Town. Also worth mentioning, this is one of the few places I know that has Peroni on tap.

If you're driving, ask about the free parking deal when you make your reservation. They offer parking in a nearby building if you're dining in. Definitely a unique spot in Montreal worth checking out.

We had excellent service from Selma. A lovely glass of Sancerre. We shared the smoked salmon & the avocado & crab starters & both had the duck - confit canard. The food was delicious- the best duck I have ever had. Thoroughly recommend.
