My friend had the salmon tartare that tasted bad, the waiter took it back & offered the steak 🥩 tartare, which was like raw hamburger beef shredded, no taste like a real beef tartare, I had the fish & chips, I ate it but it was again the most average I ever had. I paid total $85,14 tip included for a glass of beer, a white wine 🍷 for 20$, average quality, & a fish & chips, the lunch menu seems a little better because the appetizer are included with the main dishes. But again I wonder 💭 why it's French style but with a fast food average quality! I won't be back for a dinner, maybe a drink & appetizer for the ambience & service.
We arrived for dinner, two minutes after our reserved time. Reservations were made, but they didn't have many patrons, so they were hardly required. We had the pre fixed Alain special salad, steak au poivre, & a puff pastry dessert. Atmosphere was like an old school French brasserie. Only drawback was a very animated couple in the corner. The food was well prepared & we had coffee afterwards. They were pushing the turkey dinner since it was thanksgiving, but we had to decline due to my sensitivity issues.
Amazing atmosphere - French, Classic, & Retro without being pretentious.
Alain the owner is a great host.
Highly recommended. A gem in Montreal.
Ps. They have champagne bar & cigar room.
I always came to Alexandre for their delicious & real french salade niçoise. Not this time. How could Alexandre present me with a regular salad that only had some tuna on top. Where are the potatoes, tomatoes, green beans, olives? Yet the price was the same. Very disappointing.
It was early Saturday evening, July 26, 2025, when my friends & I decided to try someplace new for dinner. We found ourselves looking over the terrace menu of Chez Alexander Restaurant at 1454 Peel Street in Montreal, & agreed to dine here.
A young man named Tarek greeted us & with menus in hand, escorted us to our table. We started off the evening with drinks that were not listed on the menu but Tarek advised they can be prepared nonetheless. Moments later, Tarek returned with our drinks & a small bowl of complimentary black olives to have with our drinks. We asked for bread, & Tarek said he would get some for us. The bread we were served resembled a mini baguette, was cut into two pieces with each individual piece having been cut midway through into three separate pieces which led you to either use your knife to slice off your piece, or use your hands & tear the piece apart.
When we were ready to order our main meals, Tarek placed our orders, but they were served by a different waiter - Daniel. One of my friends had the Cassoulet Toulousain at $39, which he was not overly impressed with, rating it with a simple okay. My other friend had the Shrimp & Scallops Risotto at $34, & said the risotto was not cooked. I had the Sirloin Angus AAA at $49 which came only with a side of French fries. When I inquired about Pepper Sauce, I was told it was an extra & would cost an additional eight dollars. I passed on the Pepper Sauce. The steak was cooked as requested, but it was small & had too much fat on it. I really did not enjoy it.
Meanwhile, throughout our meals, we were sitting there with empty glasses, & no one came to us to ask if we wanted anything else to drink. We ran out of water, & as we looked around to ask for a second bottle of water, no one was insight.
After finishing our meals, the empty plates just laid there for the longest time. Once again, we could not find anyone to ask for the cheques. We did see Daniel come out from the back & go sit outside, my guess to serve the people on the terrasse, but what about the people inside the restaurant like us? He finally noticed us, & walked over to clear away the plates. Daniel didn't offer us coffee or ask whether we wanted anything else, so we asked for three cheques. Again, it was another waiting game, in fact I had to get up & go tell him we wanted the cheques. While waiting, there was a verbal argument between two staff members which we could clearly hear, & found to be very distasteful on the establishment's behalf.
We left the restaurant around 19:35, & very much doubt we will be going back to Chez Alexander again.
Bastien, our waiter & ever so qualified advisor on food & wine was just superb! The food was exquisite & the ambiance very French & bistro inviting. We will return!
Very delicious French cuisine. The affable owner Alain came by the table & made dinner all the more special & enjoyable. Highly recommend, & we will be back again when we are back in Montreal.
Service par Bastien the french Guy. Très bon moment & excellent repas.
Au plaisir de revenir à notre prochain voyage sur Montreal
We were looking for an authentic French bistro in Montreal, & Chez Alexandre was recommended to us. We decided to give it a try, & it truly was an incredible experience! My wife & I enjoyed a wonderful steak au poivre, paired with an exceptional wine & delicious fries. For starters, we had a spectacular soup of the day. To finish, we ordered the Profiterole with chocolate sauce, which was absolutely perfect. The service was impeccable as well. We were served by Bastien, who made the experience even more special. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to feel a little piece of France-a charming Parisian bistro in the heart of Montreal.
French bistro with a lovely staff. I had the steak, it was absolutely delicious! Would come back again soon.
The burger we had was fine but not remarkable. This is a typical average French brasserie like you can also find in Paris. Felt a bit like everyone was runining on automatic, lacking passion.
It was quite hot outside so we chose to sit inside. We did smell a bit of cigar smoke when we walked in. The restaurant does have a French brasserie & bistro feel. We ordered beef cheek with vegetables & lobster pasta. The beef cheek was flavorful & tender. Lobster pasta was tasty. Overall, I enjoyed the food even though it was a bit pricey.
Chez Alexandre offered quite a unique experience, perhaps influenced by our seating upstairs. Advertised as a French restaurant, the interior surprisingly had signs boasting it was an English pub. The ambiance was reminiscent of a cabaret, with the waitstaff dressed in tiny tops & mini skirts that highlighted their curvy figures. We only stayed for cocktails, which, unfortunately, were disappointing. The gin martini was undrinkable, & the cosmopolitan was poorly made. Additionally, the restaurant itself was not very clean & felt cluttered with multiple artifacts & art pieces. If you're looking for something bizarre, it might be worth a visit, & perhaps the food is very good, but overall, I was not impressed.
Genuine French bistro food- reminded me of my time in France! Also, you can count on excellent, attentive service
Loved th Frenchness of it from the petsonel to the food & ambiance. Particularly liked the quennel & profiterol. First profiterol I would describe as awesome.
Charming atmosphere, wonderful traditional French food. Cigar lounge upstairs!
We've been here twice: 2007 & 2023, & have had an amazing experience both times. The risotto, duck confit, & steak frites are exceptional, & service was lovely. We also enjoyed the cigar lounge after dinner. If you're looking for an authentic French dining experience, this is it!
Excellent, classic French service by Cliff, great food as always. M Alain was also an excellent host & took a few minutes to speak with us. A essential Montreal experience. Highly recommended!
Charming French restaurant with huge paintings of days gone by on the walls. The staff were very friendly, the food was classic French bistro food, nice atmosphere.
Loud blaring music in a pub atmosphere when we expected a classic french restaurant. Food was not good.
