Reviews consistently describe Chez Alexandre et fils as a Montreal institution with a warm, classic French bistro vibe, where the food is reliably delicious from beef bourguignon and steak frites to seafood and comforting favourites. The service is attentive and professional, and the atmosphere feels both refined and welcoming, with a notable upstairs cigar lounge and a strong wine list that guests frequently enjoy. The spot is praised for charm, consistency, and great experiences for celebrations as well as casual dinners, though a few notes about pacing or value appear from time to time. Overall it comes across as a beloved and dependable destination worth returning to.
We were seated promptly upon arrival. We were five for lunch. We all had a lovely lunch. Service was impecable, beautifully paced & we had a nice chat with the owner. I had a delicious steak frites with a lovely glass of Sancerre. I wish I could eat here every day. Many thanks & congratulations to the whole team.

Phenomenal place, amazing owner & very affordable if you're a student. The owner was really sweet & poured my friend another glass of Chardonnay. Overall nice vibe
I was at the cigar lounge , super classy & nice elegant environment, the place is cozy & clean , tv available & confortable chairs , small but good selection of Cuban cigars . Not bad price , feels good to have a place like this downtown . I didn't try the food , just the cigar lounge but I'll definitely be back for the food also :) thanks for a great start of my day
We had a lovely meal at Chez Alexandre. It was our anniversary over the weekend & they did not disappoint for our celebration. The food was excellent & timed perfectly. They provided suggestions that complimented each other & our wines. For the wines they have a lovely list & as it was something special we did splurge & they handled the wines as if it were every day (including moving us to a bit larger table to accommodate our selections. The service was all you could ask for. Our server, with one of his teammates took care of all our needs, were friendly & informative but allowed us our time & privacy. Definitely a place we'd recommend for something special, or just a perfect evening out.
Bien mangé mais peu copieux, ambiance à la française rétro mais se faire rattraper dans la rue pour le pourboire très gênant & à la limite du ridicule je ne recommande pas
The place is iconic , worth a drink & an appetizer but the main dishes are average & overpriced. My friend had the salmon tartare that tasted bad, the waiter took it back & offered the steak 🥩 tartare, which was like raw hamburger beef shredded, no taste like a real beef tartare, I had the fish & chips, I ate it but it was again the most average I ever had. I paid total $85,14 tip included for a glass of beer, a white wine 🍷 for 20$, average quality, & a fish & chips, the lunch menu seems a little better because the appetizer are included with the main dishes. But again I wonder 💭 why it's French style but with a fast food average quality! I won't be back for a dinner, maybe a drink & appetizer for the ambience & service.

We arrived for dinner, two minutes after our reserved time. Reservations were made, but they didn't have many patrons, so they were hardly required. We had the pre fixed Alain special salad, steak au poivre, & a puff pastry dessert. Atmosphere was like an old school French brasserie. Only drawback was a very animated couple in the corner. The food was well prepared & we had coffee afterwards. They were pushing the turkey dinner since it was thanksgiving, but we had to decline due to my sensitivity issues.
Restaurant confortable, les serveurs sont très sympathiques & la nourriture délicieuse, Ils ont un menu spécial optionnel pour l'action de grâce jusqu'au lundi 13 octobre
Amazing atmosphere & staff! I've noticed this place for a photoshoot long time ago.
It's very beautiful & unique, perfect place to have lunch or dinner!
