Restaurant Solmar (Sun & Sea Of Portugal) is located in the heart of Old Montreal. The family run Solmar, has been Montreal's open window onto the Portuguese culture for more than 35 years. Traditional Portuguese cuisine specialising in an assortment of fresh fish and seafood as well as wild game and market cuisine from Quebec, etc...

This was our first trip to Montreal. My wife & I are both foodies, always ready to try something new. We decided to walk, the streets were busy & there was little parking. We hoped to find something interesting & see if we could be successful as walk ins. & at that moment, in the historic Vieux Montreal, we came to Restaurant Solmar, specializing in Portuguese dining. The restaurant is not on street level & required climbing several steps to the second floor. I can't comment on whether there was an elevator or not. We had the place to ourselves! Our waiter, a well groomedprofessional was as polished as the wine glasses he was wiping down. The ambiance was intimate. A restaurant like this is meant for you to sit back, listen to the menu selections & the wine pairing. "Our chef is from Portugal," our waiter said, "& he prepares your dinner like he is still in Portugal." Now, that's what I'm talking about.I wanted the grilled octopus & my wife had the seafood paella. We went with a rioja gran reserva as recommended. Our dinner arrived beyond expectations. The wine worked wonderfully. Our lavish ncomments to the waiter prompted the chef to visit our table where he parted his only cooking secret ... "grilling octopus has to be low & slow, or it is too tough." He got that right.View more

In a new city, you randomly pick a restaurant on a very busy touristy street & hope to get a pleasant meal. The meal was good, but the service was dreadful. The scallops were in a very salty sauce. The bisque was mediocre. My fillet was nice with vegetables, & the lamb shank was decent. Most of the time, the staff just ignored us & were not very friendly.View more

Excellent service,Antony really took care of me throughout the whole dinner. He even heat up my food after I went to the bathroom. Not recommend the snails,but highly recommend the duck & figs. Clam is too salty. Bread so so not ready baked. Carbene is good.View more

We ordered the main meals only as we were starving, & it was pretty decent. We had the salmon & shrimp combo with a lemon infused rice & grilled vegetables & another had the seafood with rice. There was no seating for 4 outside, but their indoor dining room is very charming & cozy. They had one waiter serving the whole room, so it was a bit of a wait for these hungry customers but not overly long. We scoffed down the fresh bread, which would haveceven been better a little bit warm. Our food came fairly quick & the total bill wasn't too bad (we didn't order drinks or appetizers). We came here after the Aura show at Notre Dame Bascilica. Overall, a good restaurant.View more

Great Portugeuse/French restaurant in old Montreal. The food was delicious, I had a sur la mer style pasta & my wife had a beautifully cooked salmon & shrimp over rice. Plenty of fresh baked bread & several rounds of drinks. The service was equally good, an older gentleman got to know us a bit was a big hockey fan knowing players from our home town team from back in the 70's, lol. Stop here you won't regret it. Sadly the only photo I took was our view from the table.View more
