They are super cheap with portions , really rude service but the worst part it that this overhyped restaurant served super dry meat if someone had fed me some cardboard instead I may have thought it went together , don't usually post these but this was a first gathering in a long time and our party was sad :( not worth the hype
STAY AWAY !! Unless you are looking for tasteless ribs that never met smoke or a BBQ; that are red inside and the rub is intact on top while there is no flavour at all, no evidence of smoke or wood but the oddity of the layer of fat still white and uncooked; i.e. ribs done in an oven wrapped in foil period; then you best stay away.
On top of that if you really enjoy being ripped off and then being screwed around and insulted when you complain, then you will LOVE Blackstrap BBQ
The food is good indeed, at least from a local restaurant perspective. But the people there are extremely rude, like if customers are disturbing them.
We had to queue behind a counter, because believe it or not, you have to wait in line while choosing your meal!!!????? There was some people in front of us, also annoyed by this ridicule process, while all tables were empty (haven't they heard about service customers, instead of having a pretentious hostess who has nothing to do except handing you a clipping board for the clientele to make there choice while waiting in line????
Regrettably, we will never go back to this place, they are just too clueless about how to operate a restaurant. Offering a table while you are selecting your food would be a very basic thing to do.
Ribs are probably my favorite food (right after sushi) and this place doesn't let down. We got "Le Gros" for 40$ this is such a good deal. We got to try about of everything, ribs, chicken, pork and brisket. As well as coleslaw, 2 extra sides and 2 little buns. For the sides we got sweet potatoes and fried mac and cheese balls. The sweet potatoes to my disappointment, were just entire chunks of potato... I though they were going to be fries. But the fried mac and cheese balls O.M.G! Literally balls of deep fried m&c! AMAZING those were the best thing in the tray. A MUST GET
As for the meat the ribs were fall of the bone amazing. The pork was juicy and tender, much better than I expected. The brisket was ok abit dry and too peppery for my taste. The chicken was good but apart from the crispy skin its still just chicken.
The place is a mix between fast food and restaurant. You order at the counter upfront and pay right away. Give your name and they will call you when its ready. Which I like. Unfortunately not many places to sit inside. Mostly counter space and 2 picnic tables. But I get it adds to the rustic charm.
This is my second time ordering from Blackstrap BBQ, but let me explain why it will be the last.
The first time we ordered from the restaurant we had checked some reviews online and they were pretty good so we were excited to try a local spot. We ordered two plates of ribs. One with fries and one with a poutine. Each comes with a side of coleslaw. Simple enough. When we got the delivery the restaurant was closed but sadly the order was wrong. We got two plates with four ribs each, a small pile of fries and a coleslaw each for 40 dollars without including the tip we gave. No poutine. I thought to myself "Wow almost 50 dollars for this?" The portions were really small and the food wasn't very good. I figured it was a mistake. We had ordered later in the evening so maybe it was rushed out, I don't know. Anyways, I gave them the benefit of the doubt and returned the next day to talk to the manager about the situation. She said she's not in charge of the portions but she was very nice about it still and she offered us a discount for our next order so I was okay with that.
Today however, I returned and ordered one full rack of ribs, one half rack of ribs with a poutine, and an extra side of chili. Yet again, when we got home we realised there were problems with our order. Twice in a row now. The full rack I had ordered came with no fries or coleslaw. It was just a pile of pork ribs for 24 dollars. The poutine came without gravy. The other plate of ribs had no coleslaw and the chili we ordered was the size of a sauce container and cost 4 dollars.
Not only is their food inexplicably overpriced but it is absolutely mediocre at best. The ribs are dry and the sauces are laughable. Both are very thin and liquid, one is so spicy you can barely eat it, and the other is just too sweet. They are not good, at all. We had our ribs with bullseye sauce in the end.
I just can't understand how this place has so many good reviews. It sounds to me like a bunch of hipsters with too much money to spend, and absolutely no taste for good food are writing these good reviews. Being more expensive does NOT make the food better. In this case actually it's the opposite. You pay more of your hard earned money for less food, that isn't even to the standard of some fast food places in the area.
If you want expensive, small portions of mediocre food and things missing from your order, go to Blackstrap BBQ.
Don't believe the hype, or go see for yourself, but this is why we are never going back to Blackstrap BBQ.
I had nice dinner last week at this restaurant. I came back tonight for take out. I ordered the porc and brisket . The brisket was smoky delicious as always. My mom finished the fried macaroni after admitting she didn't like macaroni but that one was very good. The porc was tender and juicy, Unfortunately it was way too salty for me. Well, I'll try it again next time.
Blackstrap is set up exactly the way a southern BBQ joint should be: small, casual with a large smoker that takes center stage in the open kitchen.
The menu revolves around five barbecued meats: pork, brisket, turkey, ribs and chicken. You can get these in either sandwich or plate form, with quite a few sides to choose from. When we showed up around 7:30PM, they had already run out of brisket and ribs, which didn't leave us much choice.
We went with the Pork Sandwich (a hit) and the Turkey Sandwich (so-so).
The lady at the cash machine was friendly and we didn't have to wait too long before getting our food.
To be perfectly honest, our first visit to Blackstrap BBQ was rather disappointing. We were expecting more food-wise, based on the overwhelmingly positive blog reviews it received. Ultimately, however, we are having trouble getting past the whole "sold out" situation.
This place is the real deal! Well, depends on what your deal is. If your deal is good, simple, honest, heart warming food, then this place is. We only had two poutines during the poutine week but the burnt ends in the poutine were absolutely delicious, and the fries were soooo good. Crunchy and not oily. Clearly made from fresh potatoes, not the frozen kind. The spicy BBQ sauce that you can find on the tables was great as well. Not too spicy, with some citric accents, it just brought the gravy to a whole other level of tastiness. The music was good, the service was quick. Now if they would only get a liquor license and bring in some bourbon...I would move across the street.
I love this place. Not the sticky saucy sweet bbq we're used to. Instead a nice smoky tender trip for the palate that reminds me of my time down in the southern USA. We had the pulled pork sandwich, the brisket sandwich, and an order of ribs to try. EVerything was great with a slightly too vinegary coleslaw, but it cut through the richness like a machete. The ribs were very tender, regardless of the lack of sauce. but a weee too salty for me. The sides? a generous order (three) of deep fried mac & cheese balls should be considered as a natural antidepressant. No complaints about the brisket. Downside: There is practically no room to sit, so it'S no wonder that a steady take out line formed while we were there. There is sauce available, and it should have been offered maybe in our take out??? Next time I'll opt for the plate, the bun was too much in the sandwich.
