Il s'agissait de notre première visite au Bistro Sofia, dont le nom rend hommage à la capitale de la Bulgarie. Le menu propose principalement des plats traditionnels bulgares, avec quelques références aux cuisines des Balkans. La sélection est toutefois davantage centrée sur la Bulgarie.
Nous avions une réservation confirmée pour 17 h 30. À notre arrivée, le restaurant était vide. L'accueil a été courtois, bien que le serveur-propriétaire ait semblé hésitant & confus. Nous avons pu choisir librement notre table.
Nous avons commandé une soupe & une salade traditionnelle bulgare (shopska) en entrée puis un plat principal vers 17 h 45. Le temps d'attente pour les entrées a été d'environ 45 minutes. Les plats principaux ont été servis vers 19 h 45, soit environ deux heures après la commande, alors que plusieurs autres tables étaient arrivées après nous. Aucun plat chaud n'a été servi avant ce moment.
Durant le service, certaines demandes (eau, pain, vin) ont dû être répétées. Les assiettes des entrées sont demeurées sur la table jusqu'à ce que nous interpellions le serveur (60 minutes plus tard). Nous avons également observé des erreurs dans l'attribution de plats à d'autres tables, dont un cas où des assiettes ont été déposées à la mauvaise table avant d'être oubliées sur une table vide pendant une dizaine de minutes.
À plusieurs reprises au cours de la soirée, le serveur a semblé confus dans la gestion des commandes & des tables. Selon nos observations, il quittait régulièrement la salle pour l'arrière du restaurant & paraissait de plus en plus désorganisé au fil de la soirée. Son comportement laissait l'impression d'un possible état d'intoxication, bien qu'il ne nous soit pas possible de l'affirmer avec certitude.
Concernant la cuisine, le trio de viandes bulgares commandé présentait des cuissons'très cuites' & une texture plutôt sèche. Les saveurs des différentes viandes étaient similaires. Les accompagnements étaient simples. À noter positivement : les frites étaient croustillantes & bien exécutées, & le vin blanc bulgare était abordable & satisfaisant.
Le décor est sobre & évoque l'Europe de l'Est. Nous avons visité les Balkans à cinq reprises & avons notamment séjourné à Sofia, la capitale de la Bulgarie, il y a quelques années; nous connaissons donc la cuisine de cette région. Toutefois, sur le plan culinaire, l'expérience ne reflétait pas les saveurs typiquement rencontrées en Bulgarie ni le raffinement généralement associé à ces plats (la tendreté des viandes par exemple).
Au moment de régler l'addition, la facturation a nécessité une vérification verbale des items consommés, le serveur ne semblant plus se souvenir précisément des commandes inscrites. Le serveur avait déposé une addition écrite à la main sur notre table. Dix minutes plus tard, nous avons dû réitérer les différents items de notre commande lors du paiement à la caisse.
En résumé, malgré un concept intéressant & certains éléments appréciables, les délais de service (un record!), les irrégularités observées & la gestion générale de la soirée ont rendu l'expérience globalement décevante.
Nous avions lu des bons commentaires sur ce bistro, malheureusement le notre de sera pas si bon. Le serveur était ivre dès notre arrivée à 19h45 ce qui a rendu la communication pour passer les commandes très compliquée. L'attente était très longue pour des plats médiocres & sans goût exceptionnel, heureusement nous étions en bonne compagnie avec nos amis & avons quand même passé une bonne soirée, mais nous ne reviendrons pas.

Going to Bistro Sofia is like stepping into a different temporality. Few things happen quickly, the enjoyment is in taking the time. A small room drenched in warm yellow light frequented by'le peuple du quartier'. Couples, families, friends, young & old. One day it's rowdy children, another someone brings an accordion & plays for the late diners.
When I come here I am at ease, feeling welcomed into a sensory world of flavours, textures, & conversations that unravel under the most favorable conditions. The food is simply delicious. The pastry is perfectly sweet. The wine list is excellent. It is by far my favorite restaurant in Montreal!
Very intimate bistro, pleasant staff. We were in a hurry as we were going to a show, We had to rush off before we could finish our meal, we asked for doggie bags, owner told us to go to the show & come back after to pick up the food. He trusted us & did not ask for payment. We came back 2 hours laters to pick up our unfinished food & pay. The food was excellent, charcuterie board & cheeses, great Bulgarian specialtie!
The dishes are generous & excellent without even being expensive. The waiter was great & the atmosphere welcoming. He explained everything to know about the dishes & offered many options. An amazing Bulgarian Bistro ! Thank you !

This is an amazing restaurant. We have been there several different times.
Tikvichki (fried zuchinis), kashkaval pane (fried cheese) & Imam Bayildi (Roasted Eggplant) are our favorite dishes there! Everything is fresh & tasty!
This is a perfect place to discover more about the Bulgarian & the Balkans’ cuisine. The menu is varied, they have a very good selection of beverages & vegetarian options as well!
Despite our ocasional visits, we have decided to have our civil wedding lunch at Bistro Sofia, during summer! To enjoy their beautiful terrace & amazing food! We are extremely happy that we could count on the owners Peter & Anna, who made it possible for us celebrate our special day. The service was impeccable, as well as the ambiance. We definitely recommend this place for any future events or simply to enjoy a delicious meal in Montreal!
