I was in Montreal visiting a few days ago & wanted to try some Jamaican food, so I Googled the nearest Jamaican restaurant & Bigga Taste came up. I decided to give it a try.
When I arrived, the ambiance was very nice, the customer service was great, & the washroom was clean. There was a family of four ahead of me, & once it was my turn, I ordered an oxtail dinner, jerk chicken dinner, & a small chicken soup (the soup of the day).
Unfortunately, the food was a major disappointment.
When I got back to my hotel & opened the bag, the rice had a noticeable burnt smell. Considering the price I paid for the oxtail dinner, I honestly didn't feel that it was worth the money. There was very little gravy, & what gravy was there was very watery & lacked flavour. If you're going to stretch the gravy, you need to make sure it's properly seasoned so the flavour isn't lost.
The jerk chicken dinner was disappointing as well. My partner felt that the portion was much too small for the price, & unfortunately, the overall meal didn't live up to our expectations.
The soup did have good flavour & actually tasted pretty good. However, I was surprised when I discovered that the meat in the soup wasn't chicken as expected - it appeared to be oxtail - & the meat itself had very little flavour.
I'm including photos with my review because I believe customers should be able to see exactly what was served.
Overall, the customer service & atmosphere were good, but unfortunately the food & portion sizes did not justify the prices for us. I really wanted to enjoy this experience, especially being from out of town & looking forward to some good Jamaican food, but I left disappointed.
Hopefully the restaurant takes this feedback constructively because there is definitely room for improvement in the food quality, seasoning, gravy & portion sizes.
Very clean place, amazing owner & best Caribbean food I had in mtl since I've been here for 4 years.i got the oxtail & jerk chicken plate & I Will be back again for sure.
The food was reminiscent of Jamaica. Our food was delicious. The oxtail was succulent & bones were chewable. 😜 Also the fried chicken was tasty. A must try!
10/10 Jamaican comfort food, I strongly recommend the oxtails. There was nothing left in that plate. I'll be back to try the jerk chicken. Please come try it out for yourself
As a long time fried chicken enthusiast, I can say that Bigga Taste fried chicken was impressive (crust, crunch, & flavor were all elite). Freshly cooked quality chicken. I discovered Bigga Taste by accident while returning from another restaurant nearby & what a discovery!
We visited this restaurant today. The young man who took our order was very friendly & polite; however, there was an error with our order. I ordered a curry goat roti but received a curry goat plate instead, & was charged accordingly-$5 more than the roti I had requested. We did not review the bill before leaving as it was retained by the restaurant, & only later noticed the discrepancy.
The portion sizes were not reasonable for the price paid, & the overall food quality & flavour were below expectations. Both meals were served with the same salad that was not great.
We also ordered a Jerk Chicken Bowl but received & was charged for The jerk chicken plate which also is more expensive . It included a good sized leg & thigh, but lacked the bold, smoky flavour typically associated with Jamaican cuisine. The rice was also fairly plain & under-seasoned.
My curry goat plate contained a limited amount of meat for the price, with many bones. While the meat was tender, the curry itself lacked the depth & richness we would expect from similar restaurants.
Overall, although the service was friendly & the portions were adequate, the incorrect order, billing discrepancy, & underwhelming flavour made the experience disappointing. Given the prices, we expected a higher standard, & would be hesitant to recommend the restaurant based on our visit.
I've been to quite a few Jamaican restaurants in my life. Usually the portions are generous. My experience at Bigga Taste was the opposite, I paid 34$ & the plate was as heavy as a cheeseburger. They even put my extra plantains in the same plate & it went in all the sauce that was in the plate, no gravy on my rice. Overall bad experience except for the nice lady at the counter. Person in the kitchen is very stingy with the food.
Update : They forgot to put my chicken in the plate, which is why it was so light. I never got the plate I paid for since I live 30 minutes away.
