Jeff Simons began playing the drums at the age of ten. He studied under several teachers including Paul Delong, Marty Frankel, Jim Norman and Pete Magadini. In 1997, at 40 years old, Jeff entered the Jazz Performance program at McGill University. There, he studied drums with Chris McCann; he also studied classical and jazz harmony and jazz composition and arranging. He graduated in 2001.
Jeff has worked as a drummer since 1976, and has experience in most styles of music that use the drumset. He began playing in Top 40 bands in the 70's. In the 80's. He specialized in blues, and in this period he accompanied many great blues artists, including Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Big Mama Thornton, Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, Sonny Terry, Nina Simone and Kenny Neal. His jazz experience includes work with many known Canadian artists, including Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee, Vic Vogel, Nelson Symonds, Charlie Biddle and Dave Turner. He has also worked with well known international artists, including Johnny O'neal, Nneneh Freelon, Lorraine Klaasen, Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel. Jeff has extended experience in stage show work, both on land and on ships He toured with “Ain't Misbehavin'” in the late 80's, and played several shows in Montreal, including “Little Shop Of Horrors”and “Guys And Dolls” for Centaur Theatre. He has done about two years on ships as a show band drummer on Holland America, Celebrity and Princess. Jeff has also worked two contracts on the condo ship, “The World”, in an earlier incarnation of this trio. Working with both jazz and funk bands, Jeff has completed several hotel contracts in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Jakarta.
Born in Bermuda, Jeff started singing at a very young age, beginning in church, and afterwards in many other contexts. He has sung in numerous choirs, sometimes professionally, and studied Opera technique with David Doane and Marie Laferriere for three years. Jeff has often sung on his jobs as a drummer. This began in the 70's, singing backup in pop bands, which led to occasional lead parts, until he was the main vocalist on many jobs, always while playing drums. In the last two years, he has done a series of concerts as featured vocalist with the Montreal Jazz Big Band, including a Ray Charles show, and some Latin shows, in Spanish. He has recently toured with the renowned french Canadian artist Ginette Reno, both as a drummer and a back vocalist.
Jeff's vocal repertoire is very large, and always growing. He performs hundreds of jazz standards, or show tunes, many blues, and some songs in French, Spanish and Portugese. Repertoire is a cornerstone of the Jeff Simons Trio, and is constantly being expanded and polished.
