A brand new brunch spot named Piel Canela is opening up at Caifan Mtl restaurant. It's basically like having two restaurants in one place.
Caifan Mtl, managed by the Barranco Partners group (known for Barranco and Nikkei), boasts a spacious 4500-square-foot area spread across two floors, including a cozy private room downstairs that can accommodate groups of 40 to 70 people.
Fidel Vasquez, one of the owners, explained, "We wanted to make the most of our large space and bring it to life from morning till night. So, we came up with the idea of opening a place focused on coffee, artisan bread, and brunch." He added, "We wanted each restaurant to have its own unique vibe, with different decor and atmosphere."
They're planning to change up the ambiance throughout the day, adding touches like flowers and colorful cushions.
Leading the kitchen in the mornings will be Karla Guzman, a Mexican chef known for her work at Tapeo, L'Express, and the renowned Pujol restaurant. She'll be joined by sous-chef Edgard Trujillo and pastry chef Victoria de Oliva.
Karla shared, "At Piel Canela, I want to recreate dishes from my childhood that remind me of home and share them with the people of Montreal, my new home."
Piel Canela will specialize in Latin American cuisine with a Montreal twist, offering traditional dishes with a creative flair. Expect delights like the Tlatoyo de canard, a corn cake filled with black beans and queso fresco, served with duck breast and tomatillo salsa. They'll also serve up a Montreal-style Molito amarillo, crepes stuffed with Nordic shrimp, corn, and cilantro, in a yellow mole sauce, topped with cheese and baked. Plus, they'll have huevos Shakshouka and Piel Canela French toast made with Carlota brioche bread, served with a creamy pineapple and rum compote, passion fruit cream, seasonal fruits, and edible flowers.
They'll also offer an assortment of amazing bread from the renowned Mexican artisan bakery, Carlota.
For drinks, they've crafted a menu of signature cocktails and mocktails with exotic flavors, overseen by mixologist Jeremy Escolano. They'll also serve up fresh smoothies and a selection of decadent coffees with a Latin twist.
