Review Summary

Thanjai is widely regarded as a top destination for authentic South Indian cuisine in Montreal, frequently praised for its fresh, flavorful, and creative dishes like dosas, biryani, and various traditional snacks. Many patrons highlight the warm hospitality, welcoming atmosphere, and professional service provided by the staff, who often go above and beyond to accommodate special requests and dietary needs. While the vast majority of experiences are positive and emphasize the restaurant's consistency and value, some diners have noted occasional inconsistencies in service speed or food preparation. Despite these mixed remarks regarding busy periods or specific menu items, the restaurant remains a favorite for both casual meals and small events, earning strong recommendations for anyone seeking a genuine and memorable South Indian dining experience.

We have come here before but have witnessed the quality of dosas go down over time. We ordered the vada sambar, chilli chicken & chicken keema does. While the vada was tasty & fresh, no chutney was provided & we had to specifically ask for it. The chilli chicken was flavorful. The dosa was a big disappointment...the chicken keema was bland & tasteless....the dosa was a little undercooked & wasn't really tasty.

I ordered chicken fried rice & butter chicken. The rice was okay, but the butter chicken tasted very bad. Some of the food was tasty, but some of it was not good.

We booked an onam sadhya here & was very disappointed. Although the food was tasty, the festival special was very poorly managed. Lack of staff apart, the guy didn't know what was what. When asking for payasam he would offer the moru.
& we had some items missing from the advertised menu as well such as pulliserry, inji puli, rasam which never even made it to our table. Also they totally forgot to put glasses or offer water.
There was also a lot of waiting to get the actual curries that go with the meal. Disappointing experience, but the payasam was excellent, I would much rather if they offered parcels to go for the sadhya.
Hope you guys improve on the service next time & advertise what you will actually provide on the menu. Disappointed!

We visited this gem of a place while visiting Montreal. The food was very delicious & tasty. My kids ordered the Mickey mouse dosa & we ordered the paper masala dosa with idlinvada combo. Also the owner was super helpful!! Do visit if you are in town!
