Thanjai is widely regarded as a top destination for authentic South Indian cuisine in Montreal, frequently praised for its fresh, flavorful, and creative dishes like dosas, biryani, and various traditional snacks. Many patrons highlight the warm hospitality, welcoming atmosphere, and professional service provided by the staff, who often go above and beyond to accommodate special requests and dietary needs. While the vast majority of experiences are positive and emphasize the restaurant's consistency and value, some diners have noted occasional inconsistencies in service speed or food preparation. Despite these mixed remarks regarding busy periods or specific menu items, the restaurant remains a favorite for both casual meals and small events, earning strong recommendations for anyone seeking a genuine and memorable South Indian dining experience.
We have come here before but have witnessed the quality of dosas go down over time. We ordered the vada sambar, chilli chicken & chicken keema does. While the vada was tasty & fresh, no chutney was provided & we had to specifically ask for it. The chilli chicken was flavorful. The dosa was a big disappointment...the chicken keema was bland & tasteless....the dosa was a little undercooked & wasn't really tasty.
We used Thanjai to cater some meals for our family reunion, & we could not have been happier with the experience!
We ordered vada, samosas, biryani, & had Thanjai come to our venue for a live dosa bar. Everything was fresh, flavorful, & delicious. The team was friendly, respectful, accommodating, arrived on time, & made everything seamless. The pricing was also very reasonable, especially for the quality of food & number of people we were feeding!
If you're looking for authentic, delicious Indian food in Montreal with outstanding customer service, I highly recommend Thanjai. They played a big part in making our family reunion such a memorable event. Thank you for everything!
Had a wonderful meal at Thanjai Restaurant. Authentic South Indian flavors, warm hospitality, & consistently well prepared dishes made for a memorable dining experience. It's always great to find a restaurant that stays true to its roots while delivering quality & consistency. Highly recommended for anyone looking to enjoy the rich flavors of South Indian cuisine.
We had a remarkably pleasant time throughout the whole affair. The food selections were incredibly savory, & the people we met were very kind. The service crew was exceptionally warm & welcoming. It was a truly satisfying venture overall, showcasing great value & impressive quality that we appreciated.
Disappointing visit overall. The service was slow, & the buffet didn't meet expectations. It started late, some dishes were missing, & the same rice kept being repeated.
For $22, the value just isn't there. The food quality & aroma also seem to have declined.
Hoping to see improvements in both service & consistency.
I visited from Vancouver on a business trip & tried the killi poratta with chicken lollipop-it instantly reminded me of my hometown, Sivakasi. Amazing service & excellent food quality. This is always my go-to restaurant in Montreal.
We visited Thanjai for dinner yesterday with our family m. This was our 4th time here, & it's officially our favorite South Indian restaurant so far! We're from Ottawa, & it's honestly hard to find authentic, satisfying South Indian food there. We've been searching in both Ottawa & Toronto, & we're so happy to have found this gem.
Our kids (6 & 10) always look forward to eating here. Our absolute favorites are the Chicken 65 Biryani & Chicken Kothu Parota both are consistently delicious. The quality of the food & the service are always top notch.
Yesterday we didn't have any plans, so we literally drove to Montreal just to enjoy Thanjai's food , it's that good! We would be thrilled if they ever opened a branch in Ottawa.
We had dinner for two on a Sunday evening, & it was a wonderful experience. The restaurant was quite empty, so the food arrived quickly & was served piping hot. As is typical with excellent Tamil cuisine, the dishes were incredibly flavorful, prepared with quality ingredients, & perfectly spiced. My only suggestion would be to enhance the service slightly by having staff check in more frequently, clear empty plates, & be a bit more proactive.
