Sushi Taxi, Saint-Sauveur - where the'taxi' never actually arrives
I've spent the last five summers in Saint-Sauveur with my family, & this town has earned a special place in my heart , especially its people. Which is why this stings to write: it broke a five-year streak of nothing but good memories.
Yesterday we went as a family of twelve, five of them kids, plus my dad, who's nearly eighty. Curious name for the place - a taxi, when you call one, actually shows up. We ordered simple things: avocado-cucumber rolls for the kids, a couple of poke bowls, wakame salads, edamame.
Forty-five minutes later, all that had arrived was the food that requires zero skill to make: the edamame & wakame. We asked what was going on - the place wasn't even full - & were told they had a lot of takeout orders because of a promotion. I get that takeout is sacred, but we'd brought our hunger in person & waited patiently in their chairs, apparently the one order that didn't count.
After a full hour, still no food. My dad got up to complain & was back at the table in under a minute - sixty seconds, tops. Not exactly enough time to stage the screaming match they later described.
What I did see firsthand was what happened next: a man from the restaurant walked up to our table &, in front of every other diner, told us we'd disrespected him, that my dad had screamed at his staff, that we couldn't expect a table of 12 to be served in five minutes (we'd waited an hour, not five minutes), & that we should be grateful they'd taken us without a reservation. Then came the classic move: pay up & leave. All that was missing was'don't let the door hit you on the way out.'
I was expecting what any decent restaurant does after a mistake a drink, a dessert, some small gesture. Instead we got shown the exit. I tried to smooth it over, apologizing on my dad's behalf in case he'd raised his voice, & asking the man to admit an hour of unexplained waiting might make anyone tense. He pulled out the receipt to prove it hadn't been an hour. I checked my watch against it, we'd actually passed the hour mark by a couple of minutes. Even with the proof right there, not one word of apology.
We paid & left. Five kids never got their avocado-cucumber rolls...but honestly, that might've been the most useful thing they took from the night. A bad meal can teach what a good one never does: what it feels like to not be welcome somewhere, that you're allowed to notice that & walk away, & that you get to choose who earns your time & money - in restaurants, & later, with the people you call friends. There's always better waiting for you out there, with people who actually appreciate having you at their table.
The sushi itself is fine, nothing you'll miss. But a restaurant runs on service as much as food, & this place failed at both things that were entirely on them: the wait, & how they handled it going wrong.
I won't be back, & I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who values being treated with basic respect. No sushi is good enough to make up for that.
Ok.
