About

Sam cha provides a specialized Korean barbecue experience centered on interactive tabletop grilling. Patrons select from a curated variety of marinated meats and fresh vegetables prepared directly at the table for optimal flavor profile control. The menu emphasizes traditional culinary techniques featuring essential staples such as kimchi, soybean paste stews, and seasoned side dishes that accompany the primary protein options. Each meal centers on the tactile process of searing slices of beef and pork over charcoal or gas flames to achieve a distinctively charred texture. The interior layout prioritizes functional efficiency to accommodate social groups focused on communal cooking. This establishment maintains a robust focus on authentic seasoning profiles and high quality ingredients, ensuring that the preparation techniques remain consistent with regional Korean standards for grill house cuisine.

Review Summary

Sam Cha is widely regarded as a go to destination in Montreal for authentic and flavorful Korean cuisine, consistently praised for dishes like bibimbap, fried chicken, udon, and jokbal. While many diners highlight the affordable prices, generous portions, and welcoming staff as major draws, the restaurant is also noted for its small, cozy, and often crowded environment. Because of its high popularity among students and locals, noise levels can be high and wait times long, making reservations strongly recommended. While the vast majority of patrons have positive experiences with the quality of the food and the vibrant atmosphere, some mention occasional inconsistencies in seasoning or service speed, and others point out that the intimate seating arrangement can be a bit tight for those seeking a quiet dining experience.

Bit noisy with the open kitchen, but the creamy chicken was THE best i ever tasted.

I ordered a chicken bibimbap but it was kinda bland so I had to ask for salt. My friend had the pork kimchi fried rice which was very good. The service was okay, the place is rather busy but it took quite a while to get a waiter's attention to get salt & a to-go box since they don't pass by the tables to ask how everything is/if we need anything. Overall nice restaurant.

Curry katchu was burnt & salty. The taste was bitter because of they over fried. The worst katchu ever.

We ordered the beef tartare, kimchi fries, & beef ribs. Beef tartare & kimchi fries are must order, beef ribs were good too to finish off on as a main.

Server with the lip piercing was really kind, apologized, & compensated us for our waiting times.

The restaurant was very busy, so they seated us in an extra dining area at the back. We had no problem with that, but it felt like they forgot about us.

Our waiter took our order for two main dishes & a soju. He brought the soju, but after 45 minutes only one of our meals arrived. The second meal never came. We asked about it & were told it would be ready in five more minutes, but it still never showed up.

In the end, we had to share one meal, & by then it was cold because we had been waiting to eat together.

What made the experience even more disappointing was being told it would only take five more minutes when that clearly wasn't true. It would have been better to be honest about the delay. Overall, it was a very bad experience, & we left hungry & disappointed!

Okay, an honest but fair & generous review:
1. The atmosphere - I'm giving a 3, but that's generous.'Zen-like' does not describe this place. It was noisy to the point of having difficulty hearing my partner. That said, I hadn't read any reviews first, which is probably a good thing because I would have been harsher. We literally were walking by & decided to eat there, not knowing beforehand what to expect.

2. The service was fine, our server was attentive but we didn't realize she had sent us the wrong starter until it was too late - it was tasty but again, not what was expected. Details do matter.

3. The food was good, tasty & the pancake was a delicious discovery (though it reminded us of a take on the Spanish tortilla).

Overall? The atmosphere & distracted service worked against the food, which was solidly good but not stellar.

Not a criticism, but it struck me as a noisy student dining place/ hangout with good, solid food. Nothing wrong with that - just not for everyone & certainly not'Zen-like'…

Would I return? Probably not. Would I recommend it to my rowdier undergrad friends? Absolutely! Just not my cup of sake.
