A school canteen service dressed as a restaurant.
With regret I write the following review. However I do hope the result will be that either the restaurant can improve for other visitors or that other potential visitors have had an honest review to inform them when they are choosing where to go for a kosher meal when visiting Montreal.
We visited today at 6.30pm for dinner, family of 5.
We looked at their website when we were choosing where to go & saw they had a reasonable sushi platter deal offered so we chose Saizen.
-We arrived at the restaurant & were given menus. We could not find the platter advertised on their website on the menu. This was an issue as the menu platters on the restaurant menu were nowhere near as good a deal. *Picture attached for in restaurant menu platters.
-I went to the staff & asked who I thought was the manager (I believe here name was Keren) if we could order the platter we saw online as it was not on the restaurant menu.
-She replied that the platter we saw online was for takeaway only. I pointed out that that was not stated anywhere on the website as far as we could see, & we had travelled quite a way to her restaurant based on the menu we saw online.
So this is where things went downhill. My wife & I sensed that 'Keren' was not pleased with us at all for daring to raise an issue.
Her reply was a very curt & defensive repetition that it was not on the menu because the online menu we saw was only for takeaway. No acknowledgement of my point or apology.
I sat down & we ordered our food. We had 3 hungry kids waiting to be fed.
-We all noticed how all the other tables were offered carats of cold water with ice apart from us. When we asked for water, it was brough room temperature without ice.
- when we were served, my food didn't arrive. After nearly 10 minutes of watching my family eat our waiter came & asked us how the food was! I had to point out to him that mine still had not arrived.. he went to the kitchen & brought it. No apology.
-My family were satisfied with the taste of their sushi & fish & chips for the kids, but we're still hungry & had to order more to feel full.
-my noodles were a bit tasteless, big chunks of undercooked vegetables. Edible but not a meal to remember.
- we paid & did tip the waiter despite his failing to ensure that we all had our food together & that we somehow did not warrant the same level of service as other customers.
-The manager & staff ignored us when we got up & left, there was no goodbye. So overall we felt very uncomfortable & unwelcome.
It is such a shame. It seems that with a number of kosher restaurants someone opens it with making money being the only motivation. No real care for giving great customer service, no real care for making great food.
A "You should feel lucky for coming to eat here" attitude has no place in the kosher restaurant industry in 2023. In the past we used to just take it & resign ourselves to the belief that kosher restaurants just don't know how to operate at the same standard as others- but there are good ones out there so the bar needs to raise & mediocrity or worse needs to be highlighted so things can improve.
