Review Summary

Restaurant Pinophyta is widely regarded as a hidden gem in Montreal, offering an authentic and flavorful Cantonese dining experience that many patrons compare to home-cooked meals. The menu features highly praised dishes such as clay pot rice, Hainanese chicken, Dan Dan noodles, and fresh, handmade dumplings, all served in a clean and welcoming atmosphere. While the majority of guests rave about the outstanding, attentive service and reasonable prices, a small number of visitors have noted inconsistencies with certain dishes or portion sizes. Overall, the restaurant is frequently recommended for its warm environment, thoughtful menu notations for dietary needs, and dedication to quality, making it a popular choice for both casual lunches and special occasions.

Lovely place. Nice atmosphere & food is delicious. Our favorite is the beef noodle soup but the hainanese chicken & the clay pot were great too.

We stopped here on vacation & got the spicy beef rice (pictured) & clear broth beef noodles. In the soup, the broth was delicious & the beef tender. The rice was a tasty blend of textures. My spouse said it was'what every rice bowl I've ever had wishes it could be!' It was already spicy & flavorful on its own, but I added some of the homemade chili oil & that was also incredible! I would come again if I lived nearby!

Very good Chinese restaurant with lots of delicious options, I would recommend the clay pot rice with spicy beef. The menu is also helpful as there are symbols next to each item, making it easy to tell whether the food is spicy or if it has certain ingredients like peanuts, beef, or chicken.

Delicious food & very warm & friendly service! We got the chili wontons, cold chicken, steamed Chinese broccoli, Cantonese wonton soup, & the clear beef broth noodle soup. All excellent! Look forward to returning here again.

Nice Chinese restaurant. The beef & eggs stone pot rice is flavourful. It comes with a soup as well. Chicken rice with a lot of ginger on it. Personally i like ginger, so i dont mind. Appetizers are tasty especially the deep fried pork. Cold served spicy chicken is juicy.

I feel sorry to rate 2/5 because Pinophyta has unique items, the service is so great, but the food really disappoints. This is the epitome of just because you are different, high quality, & put in a great effort it does not make you good.

First, if you are going to serve COLD blanched flavourless chicken (poulet salivant) then please clarify so. The fridge-cold chicken 🐔❄? was unexpected & unpleasant.

Secondly, the wonton soup hits you with a disappointing broth smell. Strange flavour & taste, & the meat inside the wonton not properly cooked, or wrong flavour idk (pork or beef + shrimp). It's weird bc it feels like they did put in a great deal of effort. I also found the noodles underwhelming, but still high quality, not cheap.

Good peanut butter dumplings 🥟 & the service from the dark haired lady (early 20s maybe) with glasses very polite & respectful.

Maybe the food is really authentically Chinese & my taste buds have adapted to Chinese-Canadian expectations too much. Until then, this place is only 2/5 for me, but I find it great others like it so much the average goes to 4.8/5, provided the reviews are authentic.

Worth a try, but expect very different & potentially unpleasant. Go if you want an unexpected experience while accepting the risk of positive or negative.

We've been here maybe 5 times already & loved it each time. The mouth watering chicken & century eggs are always my go to apps. I really like the clay pot rice dishes too. The new hainanese chicken is so good, & the braised beef dishes too!

After exploring around McGill University, I found this Chinese restaurant. I tried the cold beef & spicy kelp?both were authentic & delicious. The braised pork intestine noodles were also amazing, with rich marinade & a flavorful broth. The attentive service & cozy atmosphere were a big plus. Highly recommend!

Incredible food. Easily the best clay pot rice in Montreal I've had so far. So we split a spicy beef clay pot rice, a mushroom clay pot rice, a hainanese chicken rice & a shrimp fried rice, the set meals also came with a soup which was quite nice. The best in my opinion was the mushroom clay pot & the hainanese chicken rice, both kept me salivating between bites. The best treat though of course is the crispy rice at the bottom of the clay pots. Bro I'd fight the table for the last bite of that. 10/10 I'd go again, & order less rice dishes & try some of the other stuff on the menu like those dumplings, because damn they looked good too. Oh yeah, interior & atmosphere was great, bring a date here, cause it does feel swanky.
