We were only in Montreal for two days, plus one extra day on our way back from Quebec City, & we ended up eating at Le Canal twice because we liked it so much.
One of the best things is that you get to choose the seafood yourself, so you can pick whatever looks the freshest. Both the fried & grilled dishes were excellent.
My personal favorite was the grilled octopus. The seasoning & accompaniments were absolutely outstanding. The only downside was that some of the more heavily charred parts tasted bitter.
The fried sardines were also incredibly good - definitely one of our favorites. We also ordered grilled fish. Interestingly, the fish we had on our first visit was split open before grilling, while on our second visit we chose a different fish & it was grilled whole. We also tried the shrimp both grilled & fried, & both versions were delicious.
The one thing we really didn't enjoy was the rice. It just wasn't to our taste at all.
The service, however, was excellent. My parents prefer drinking hot water, & although the restaurant didn't have any ready, the staff actually boiled some for them on the spot, which we really appreciated. We also found the salad a little too acidic for our taste, & when we asked if they could use less vinegar, they were happy to accommodate the request.
The atmosphere also seems very family-friendly. There are quite a few large, long tables, & we noticed several other big family gatherings while we were there. The tables are placed quite close together, so there isn't much space between you & the neighboring table, but the restaurant wasn't very crowded when we visited, so it wasn't really an issue for us.
Overall, we really enjoyed Le Canal. The seafood was fresh, most of the dishes were very well prepared, & the service was genuinely thoughtful & accommodating. The fact that we came back twice during such a short trip probably says it all.
This is an excellent seafood experience. I give it 10 out of 10 on every front including value for price.
The restaurant serves fresh fish & seafood, expertly cooked & abundantly flavorful. We ordered the Royal Dorado (grilled), Rose Dorado (fried), smelt, calamari, grilled octopus salad, fries, & green salad. Every bite was an explosion of flavor. The chefs do not skimp on herbs & spices, the dominant flavor on the baked fish was cumin: amazing! The fried fish was sprinkled with sesame seeds & herbs, the octopus salad was simply the king of the table (we remembered too late that octopus should not be on our personal menu given the high level of emotional intelligence of the animal).
You order at the fresh fish counter & the food arrives as ready. The staff are friendly, the place is very busy so make a reservation unless you dont mind waiting 30 to 60 minutes.
The one thing I would hope for are curtais cause when the sun hits in the summer the restaurant becomes a hot-house otherwise everything is perfect. We left satisfied, full but not bloated. Everyone in the party expressed a desire to return.
Absolutely outstanding experience! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm & inviting, with a fresh ocean vibe that immediately set the tone. The seafood was incredibly fresh-every bite tasted like it came straight from the sea. The grilled fish was perfectly cooked, tender, & full of flavor, & the seasoning was just right without overpowering the natural taste.
The service was equally impressive-friendly, attentive, & knowledgeable about the menu. They made excellent recommendations & ensured everything was perfect throughout the meal.
Presentation was beautiful, portions were generous, & the quality exceeded expectations. This is easily one of the best fish restaurants I've visited. Highly recommend to anyone who loves fresh, delicious seafood. I'll definitely be coming back!
Food is delicious! Great variety of fresh seafood that they prepare from scratch. Loved the grilled octopus & fried seafood plate too. Service is kind. Place is packed & noisy but it's because it is so popular.
