Modavie is a timeless place that brings us back to our roots, where ladies & gents gather and eat in a lively atmosphere caused by great conversation, live music and the wooden scents of a vintage room. Born in 1997, it quickly became popular among locals & visitors, and is now considered a Montreal institution.
Treat yourself to refined French fare in an antique & dimmed corner locale spawning two floors. From the classic beef tartare, to tasty sweetbread, to the famous ratatouille, your cravings will be easily satiated.

The best duck I've ever had! I strongly recommend it! Looking forward to coming back during my next Montreal visit.
Friend of mine & I came for dinner - it was our first time there. The food was delicious, service was excellent, wine selection was great, & the live music was very cool! We had a great time!
The only downside was the space was quite loud so is it was really hard to have a conversation & to hear each speaking.View more
Amazing time last night sitting at the bar. The bartenders were great, food was amazing, wine was delicious.View more
Cons: the resturant is a little dirty. I received a dirty wine glass, dirty napkin, & there were used utensils & spills on the floor. Also, there were a lot of noisy kids. The menu didn't make me think this would be a family resturant.
Pros: the staff was incredibly nice & the food was excellentView more
Excellent food & wine. Serveur Patrice is a real class act & has a top tier sense of humour. Really fantastic dinner experience.View more
Came in for a glass of wine. Great wine list & the ambiance was nice. Will definitely be backView more
Absolutely loved this restaurant. Food was very delicious, & everyone was very happy with the food & service.
They had accidentally given me potatoes instead of mashed potatoes, & when I asked to verify just so I won't be charged extra (it wasn't a big deal, honestly), they came back with a massive bowl of mashed potatoes & told me it was on the house. Seriously, could've have asked for better service.
The lamb I thought was a little too subtle on the flavours, but that's my personal taste, & I believe pretty much everyone else would've thought this was well seasoned (my friends tried it & thought it was really really good). Mashed potatoes, vegetables, & the potatoes were all very delicious.
The waiter also suggested me a red wine to go with the lamb that I've been trying to find, & have been failing to - I only remember hearing'Chateau', which didn't help me narrow it down when I got home. If you see this, Modavie, & any of your waiters somehow remember my wine from 22 Nov 2024, I would be forever in your debt (I probably should've asked earlier). We were also the group that sat in front of the band & ended up moving to a quieter part of the restaurant (which they did so happily - thank you so much).
Anyways, 10/10 would recommend, everyone should give this place a try. My friend's duck & steak were all incredibly delicious as well. Can't wait to come back when I visit Montreal again.View more
Gluten-free Poutine!!! The food here was so good & so many items gluten free. Except dessert! Please work on that.
We started with the poutine with lamb. Delicious salty gravy & the tender lamb. Wow! We then had lamb chops & the mushroom risotto. Both were very good. The mushrooms were crispy on the truffled rice. So good. I loved the lamb chops & thought a large portion. The crème brûlée was good but nothing exciting. They were out of a few things such as the chicken. The wine choices were good only if you bought a bottle.
The restaurant is set up as restaurant on one side & bar on the other with jazz. I enjoyed the jazz from the restaurant side but would not have wanted to eat in the bar.
There is construction on the streets around the restaurant if you are driving be aware.View more
Great location, the food was mostly good - we had calamari, charcuterie & cheese board & the beef tartare (don't get the beef tartare it isn't going to be what you want it to be).
I had a nice glass of red wine & my husband had a beer which he had to ask for a couple times before it showed up. We liked the atmosphere & planned to stay but nobody ever came back to check on us or see if we wanted another drink - what a shame! We had to hunt our server down for the bill & then we left. & no, it wasn't busy at the time.View more
Loved the atmosphere! It was buzzing & full, even on a Monday evening. Reservation definitely recommended. Prior to arriving, we were informed that mains were not shareable (each guest needs to order their own main). I thought that was fair. I did not fancy sharing my delicious mushroom risotto anyway :)
My partner had lamb cavatelli which was delicious as well.
For dessert we had opera cake & profiterole. Our wines were enjoyable too. The server was great.
All I can say is bring your appetite (& wallet)!View more
Must try in Montréal
Great restaurant in the old town of Montréal. The staff were all very attentive & anticipated my needs, such as keeping my water topped up & asking how was the food & if I'm ready for desserts. The food all came relatively quick for a very busy restaurant. All the food I've ordered was tasty & the wine was great too.
The atmosphere was lovely as it had a live band. I enjoyed every moment of it & will look forward coming to this restaurant again.View more
This is a wow restaurant. It is a must go restaurant in Montreal. You will not be disappointed ! The restaurant is huge with live music, good decoration & warm, a good selection of wine & French cuisine. I had garlic snails to start with….it was super delicious & finished all my bread! Then I had the duck confit - yes yes yes, you can taste the coffee! The potato, spinach, roasted almonds & the melt in my mouth super delicious duct confit take my breath away. The French Malbec - very good, wish I ordered 1 bottle ! I finished the meal with a delicious chocolate Lava Cake. You must have it ! The service is very good & professional.View more
We were two people. Had two bottles of red wine & four food items in the dinner including 12 oysters/1 salad/1 French onion soup/1 steak frites, & the total came to $240 with taxes & plus 18% tip was added/paid. (Just two wine bottles were of $120 plus tax). It was nice speaking with Daniel, the bar tender. Food was fresh. It was an alright experience.View more
This might be my favorite restaurant in the world. The food alone makes this five stars. I've had the mushroom risotto topped with braised lamb, linguini with duck confit, & the lamb chops. All were excellent. Great wine selection. Chocolate mousse pyramid for dessert was amazing. The live music is the best I've ever seen while dining. Each time we visited Modavie, we saw GL Chambers & Band who perform a soulful mix of rock & blues. They are so talented & play with such a warm spirit. The music brings Modavie from a five star restaurant to a special must-visit destination.View more
Stopped for lunch, fantastic onion soup & wine list.View more
Honest review. For the price this restaurant is excellent. The service is great, the atmosphere excellent. If you get there on the earlier side it is kid friendly. I had the rack of lamb & I was hesitant when my waiter mentioned it was a lamb & red wine reduction & mint. Mint is used & overused on lamb & I've seen it overpower many a delicious meal. However, it was subtle to perfection. Just the hint of mint which added just a little clear bite to the deliciousness of the red wine reduction & the crispness of the charred herb. A delightful experience all around.View more
Vraiment, on mange bien ici. A lovely place. Lamb was excellent. Service was warm & friendly. Wines & cocktails all added to an excellent time, in a very fine restaurant.View more
Lovely dinner, the server is not good at English so he ended up avoiding our table, which was a large group of 7 & we spent around 100 each in wine & dine so I think it was not so bad to get a lame servicd. Water is not refilled & in a rush to finish us up (& our reservation & got pushed back 45 mins later so not our fault we came 2 hours befote last call). The server mentioned the lamb is specialty of restaurant but it clearly did not executed well, there is still unpleasant lamb smell. But the duck is clearly the star of this restaurant, we got the seared duck & the winter pasta (foie gras & duck meat & truffle) which is absolutely amazing. We will come back just for the pasta. Steak also very good, mashed potato is creamy just enough. As travellers, understanding we went to Quebec but hopefully the server can be a bit more proactive (I mean, doesn't really need to speak any English & just being attentive to refill water or give us some lights on the table in the dark corner?)View more
I do not recommend coming to this restaurant because it was a huge disappointment for us. We had a reso but the restaurant was not busy at all, with many empty tables inside. Our server greeted us & we placed both a drink & food order. My mom got her coffee right away but I think the server forgot my wine. I sat & waited for 30 minutes before I got impatient & tried to flag the server down. When we finally got our food, which also took a really long time, it was mediocre. We ordered the mussels & fries & when the guy who delivered it opened the cover of the bowl, a mussel fell onto my mom's foot. The fries were also cold & soggy. The grilled octopus was okay. It was also cold & for the price I thought it would be a bigger portion. In total we spent over $100 cdn & it was not worth the money to me.View more
We had a lovely meal here. The ceaser salad was so incredible! Also the lamb pasta, lamb chops & omg!.. the apple dessert! Whoa! That was so freaking good! The wine & cocktails were so Incredible. Honestly, everything was incredible. Modavie is doing great things. The live jazz created a beautiful environment & our waiter George provided excellent service 👏. Can't wait to dine here again when we're back in Canada.View more
Amazing experience! We had a great time with a party of 6. Most of us had a dish with lamb, as we were told it was their specialty, & they certainly delivered! Several of us usually don't even like lamb, but Modavie converted us. Our waitress, Eman (sp?) was so lovely & made the night so enjoyable, giving us details about the wine we ordered & just being so personable & kind. We were in a room next to where the band was playing so the noise level was perfect. I would recommend asking for a table outside of the room the band is playing in if you are hoping for conversation because you can still hear, just not as loudly. It was so enjoyable to listen to!View more
I ordered the filet mignon & it was so salty & veggies were cooked to the consistency of baby food. I was shocked at the prices for the house wine I requested as well & one mixed drink( there was no bar menu on our table). The food is okay but they will get you on the alcohol with the prices , beware. Our waitress & service was lovely.View more
This is the place for lamb chops or the individual lamb ribs grilled on an open fire. In the USA lamb chops are totally different ;). The rack of lamp is the ribs not separated & grilled in the oven. The beef tartare with bone marrow was good but it could've been great if not already premixed but I guess that allowed for the presentation on the bone. The service is top notch & it's awesome that they've the live music on the second floor as an option but it starts at 7 PM. Great selection of wines & drinks.View more
Very nice & typical French place with live music. Even though we didn't book they gave us a table because they are very organised. Excellent meat & salmon & light pink wine with if we were in Provence.View more
Wonderful food, service, & personal experience with George. George was knowledgeable about the wine menu when we couldn't decide what to order & he was very attentive to our table. We ordered the French onion soup, seafood linguine, & steak & fries. It hit the spot! All the food came out timely & so so delicious. Because we are visiting for the weekend we asked George about local places & he went out of his way to suggest local things to do, eat, drink. Thank you for a great dining experience & fabulous food!View more
Excellent bistro. Good jazz (but often more blues) guitarist upstairs, quiet enough for conversation. Attentive service staff. I had onion soup & mussels + frites, all of which was great. Wine selection was good, a bit more expensive than comparable places. Not an issue for us, but tables do turn - they indicated when we arrived that we only had the table for two hours.View more
We booked a last minute reservation, & were very glad we did. There was lovely live music in the next room. The atmosphere was festive, with nice moody lighting, a gorgeous old building & great bistro-type decor. There are hundreds of wine choices & the server was knowledgable about all the wines we asked about. I had the risotto, & my husband had an off-menu steak. We had tuna tartare as an appetizer. We were so impressed with the service (see the photo of him posing) & the food, & with the beautiful ambiance. Highly recommended!View more
Best at night , but nothing to say about noon ... I love the food & the atmosphere, it's one of my faves ... Wine list is also greatView more
Great place for French food & live music. The rack of lamb was some of the best I've had at a restaurant & our server was very helpful on helping us pick out our wine, appetizer & desserts. Will be back!View more
