Let me start by saying that I really wanted to love this place; I had only heard great things about Mitch Deli.
To start with the positives: the space is cute, nicely decorated, has a great overall vibe, & blends perfectly with the neighborhood. Our waiter was also incredibly sweet. The three hushpuppies ($8) were light, fluffy, & accompanied by a beautifully balanced coriander-lime sauce. They also offer a very tasty canned passionfruit kombucha ($5).
The rest of the experience, unfortunately, was well below'meh.'
It took forever to get our food. I assumed the delay was due to a slow kitchen, especially since there were two waiters servicing a not-too-busy dining room. However, when the food finally arrived, it was cold. I'm still not sure if it just sat on the counter losing heat before being served.
The pieces of popcorn chicken ($13) were tiny & seemed like the leftover scraps from carving chicken for their sandwiches. They were coated in a cold, thick, hardened, & completely non-crispy fried batter (though the cucumber salad underneath was actually good).
Their iconic fried chicken sandwich ($17) was the only well-portioned dish. However, apart from its decent, even generous size, it shared all the flaws of the popcorn chicken: a cold, thick, hardened batter. The brioche bun was just okay, & the entire sandwich lacked seasoning & flavor definition. The fries ($8) were also a letdown: cold & soggy, yet somehow overcooked & almost burnt.
The dish I found flat-out bad was the beef brochette ($26). Not only was the portion tiny, but the meat actively tasted off. It had a strong, unpleasant funk that shouldn't be there-& I love beef in every form, whether it's tartare, braised, or stewed. The accompanying potatoes were tasteless & slightly undercooked. The only positive quality of the dish was its beautiful presentation.
One might think a restaurant's quality slips when the owner or head chef gets too busy with other projects & neglects their original flagship. However, in this case, Maxime Gagné was actually present in the restaurant.
If I had to guess, the food must have been great at some point, but the kitchen is now simply coasting on past reputation, social media hype, a cute aesthetic, & a distinct beer & wine selection. It's a shame, because I really wanted to love this spot. Even though a $86 dinner for two (without alcohol & before tax) is considered reasonable nowadays, it simply wasn't worth it. The quality of the food was subpar, even compared to a standard food truck.
Ventured out here to try this modern take on a deli. Atmosphere is pretty far from your traditional MTL Deli, not to any detriment though. The menu is small, I imagine the fried chicken sandwich is the star of the show here. That was what I ordered & it was delicious. The fried chicken was perfectly made, the skin to meat ratio was blessed. Perfectly crispy coating on it with a hot sauce at the right heat level for the sandwich. Considering it didn't come with any fries or anything, the $18 total was a bit much for just the sandwich but not an abnormal price in 2025 either. My friend got the ribs & his portion seemed poorer, however. Service was fine, very professional.
Waitress was way rude. Had their signature dish a fried chicken sandwich. It was hard on the edges the only edible part was the middle. Had fries.....or they called em fries. Arrived cold. & it was this skinny crap that looked like toothpicks it was so skinny. These are not fries people can't eat this crap. Skip this place. Turns out there is a good sandwich shop a little further down the block. I mean French fries.....isn't French your heritage? Next you'll want to put mayonnaise on your fries.Goof grief
An awesome gem tucked in Vieux-Rosemont. Great vibes & wine selection. The place is so cozy & warm, you feel like eating at your friend's house. Love this place & will keep going regularly as I can't get that fried chicken sandwich out of my head..!
WHAT A GEM! FOOD WAS REALY GOOD & SUCH AN AWESOME WINE LIST! COZY PLACE WITH FRIENDLY STAFF! FOR SURE ORDER THE FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH (DID NOT MAKE IT TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED)!! 🥂
Meh. The chicken burger just tasted very fried & lacked flavor. The bun was drenched in oil (maybe that's a takeout thing) & the best part was the pickle (very juicy & tasty). Julienne fries are so skinny they are unsatisfying. So both things just tasted like fried stuff :( Fish n chips were under-seasoned & undersized. Expensive for what you get.
Delicious food... not cheap but worth it. Loved the Brussels sprouts & the fried chicken sandwich.
