Mikado modestly tries to master this art in skilfully preparing sushi and sashimi as well as teriyaki, tempura, soba and a vast assortment of other succulent dishes. Among the pioneers of Japanese cuisine in Montreal back in 1987, Mikado first opened with an 80-seat capacity and only two employees. But through the magic of word of mouth, Mikado expanded and can now welcome 130 guests in a pleasant, family-style and laid back environment conducive to appreciation of great food. Kimio Nguyen, the chef-owner, now has under his wing a wonderful team of over 40 loyal and attentive professionals whose culinary philosophy is based on Japanese tradition while taking into account the eclectic tastes of Montrealers. Three basic elements underpin Mikado's philosophy: creativity, simplicity and balance. Creativity to dazzle with original dishes; simplicity to allow for the experience of full unadulterated flavours; and balance to beautifully bring together tastes, textures, ingredients and colours. The attention to detail and aesthetics is reflected in the decor and even in the use of hand-made tableware. With all this in mind, Mikado tries to fulfil the needs and desires of its customers. Mikado has always been one of my absolute favorite sushi spots - & this visit reminded me exactly why.
We started with miso soup, soft?shell crab, & a fresh salad, followed by two beautifully presented sashimi platters & two nigiri ones. Every piece of fish was pristine & cut with care - delicate, clean, & perfectly balanced. The lobster roll & paradise roll were equally impressive, marrying flavor & texture in a way that only Mikado manages to pull off.
The sake selection is phenomenal, & the mixologists truly take their craft to the next level. Add to that a team that's endlessly knowledgeable, kind, & welcoming, & you've got an experience that feels both refined & personal.
It's the perfect example of sushi done right - thoughtful, consistent, & made with genuine passion. Highly recommended.

Mikado is a stylish, upscale spot with excellent sushi. We arrived in rain jackets since we were visiting, & the host initially asked if we were picking up - which made us feel a bit unwelcome despite having a reservation.
But the experience completely turned around thanks to our waitress. She was warm, friendly, & attentive, & really made us feel comfortable. The food was fresh & beautifully prepared.
A great meal overall, with service that truly made the difference.

Visited Mikado on a friend's recommendation, mainly for the cocktails - & it didn't disappoint. Simone, the bartender, was amazing. Every drink we had was refined, balanced & honestly one of the best we've had. The manager told us that Lola poured her heart into creating these cocktails & it showed.
Service was friendly & fast, with great hospitality all around. The space was beautiful, & even the bar seating felt spacious & cozy. The food was great as well, especially the small bites & rolls. Would absolutely come back.

The service from Leah was excellent. The lunch specials are delicious & have an appetizer, entree & dessert. Highly recommend will be back. We celebrated my husband's birthday here & it was wonderful. It's also a beautiful place.

Beautifully renovated inside. Owners are exceptional people. Fish is great & new ambiance is amazing. They also treat my children like VIP, which is an added bonus.
Absolutely amazing sushi-easily in my top favorites in town! The quality is outstanding, prices are very reasonable, & everything we tried was beyond delicious. The lobster roll, in particular, was one of the best we've ever had. Beautiful decor, great ambiance, good service, & a nice location. Highly recommend!

Overall it's a beautiful restaurant but I have to say that the food is really average at best & not great at the worst . The miso soup for me always sets the tone for Japanese fare & this was near tasteless . The rest of the meal was very similar unfortunately . I wanted to love it since the ambience & design of the atmosphere is so beautiful but I won't return.

We recently celebrated my husband's birthday at the newly renovated Mikado & we were so impressed. The decor is contemporary, warm & inviting. The food is inventive, colourful & beautifully presented on gorgeous earthenware. The staff was fantastic - they are experienced, knowledgeable & went out of their way to ensure we all had great evening. We did!! & we will be back!!
Dining at Restaurant Mikado Laurier is an experience I highly recommend. Their newly renovated space combines a chic, modern ambiance with the best quality sushi & impeccable service. The service is outstanding, with attentive & knowledgeable staff who enhance the dining experience with their recommendations & warm hospitality. Of course, the highlight is the sushi itself, crafted with the freshest ingredients & beautifully displayed.
I recently had the pleasure of visiting the newly renovated Mikado on Laurier. If you don't want to read any further then the one word review is OUTSTANDING. The new decor is timelessly traditonal with a whole new edge making it cool & comfy. The tables are spaced well & the meals are presented artully. Our service was engaging & professional without being too much of iether. At one point a plate was placed before my companion (who is vegetarian) & a second server, instantly moved it to avoid any sensitivities she might have had...before she even had time to notice- subtle professionalism ! Now the best part...the food! It was beyond spectacular, I had a piece of Black cod that now ranks as the best I have ever tasted. I believe it was braised & marinated to the point that it literally melted in my mouth leaving nothing but taste & a desire to return for the more. The vegetarian options were equally delicious of note was the lighter than air batter on the Tempura. dessert was capped off the meal with a deconstructed apple tart UNDER a creme brule that was sublime. I have no hesitation highly reccomending this beautiful sushi house, it's as much a feast for the eyes as it was for the palate. We will be back soon!!
Nice presentation, beautiful place, delicious & fresh ingredients but it was overpriced & the sushi menu was lacking variety. The cocktail menu was more impressive!
The food was fantastic! The amazing food combined with a beautiful atmosphere led to a very fun night out. The staff was very friendly & kind! Would highly recommend, one of the best restaurants in the city!
