Paris may be an ocean away, but the art of casual French bistro dining is not lost at Le Pois Penché in the heart of downtown Montréal.
The menu reads like a who’s-who of Parisian comfort food favourites, with beloved classics the likes of steak tartare and duck confit in mustard sauce alongside an array of spectacular seafood platters. Boasting one of the most interesting wine collections in the city, Le Pois Penché offers an impressive selection of imported bottles and wines by the glass.
This authentic French brasserie delivers fine cuisine in simple opulence: plush red velvet, checkerboard floor tile, crystal chandeliers, large paintings and a blackboard listing the daily specials on the wall. In the middle, a large bar; around it, busy waiters flitting to and from, outfitted in the traditional white shirt, black vest and apron. French bistro, through and through.
Le Pois Penché’s terrasse buzzes with animated conversation while its private banquet rooms reserve their splendour for group functions. Le Cellier, in particular, offers a sumptuous venue for events up to 70 guests, with vibrant Parisian settings by artist Pierre Pivet, a vaulted brick ceiling, and the restaurant’s prized wine cellars displayed behind sleek glass panels. Connected to the brasserie, Salon Chez Swann, in the boutique hotel of the same name, is ideal for groups of 24 guests or less.

Je me suis régalée. Les huîtres étaient excellentes. & les explications de Julien sur les différentes variétés & les accords ont vraiment apportées un plus. En plus le cadre est très agréable très cosy & toute l'équipe adorable De l'accueil au service.View more
The food was really fresh & tasty, but the portions are really small to be called a brunch! Also if you seat somewhere beside the center, be cautious about the longer time you have to wait for the waiters. Our journey there didn't start well as I had to kill a small bug when I sit on my table! Also hearing loud Arabic music wasn't fun at all!View more
We were in Montreal for 3 days & ended up coming here twice, it was so great. Stopped in for a martini & Oysters with Julien + Clement one night & we had such a great experience we came back for brunch the next day. Great food, awesome oyster bar selection, & just a fun atmosphere with such friendly staff that we almost came back a third time.View more
We went for a family dinner eight of us & a 1 year old. We had a fantastic time in the restaurant & the experience was first class from entering to leaving. The service was friendly & attentive & our waiter was an engaging, knowledgeable guy as well as giving great recommendations for specials. All of try dishes the group ate were all very good. I had the escargot & a fillet steak. Both were exceptionally good. It was our second time there & it was as good as the first time. Really enjoyed it.View more

This was oneof my favorite places to go for seafood & French bistro atmosphere. But last time I went the food was not up to standards. The bouillabaise had tiny pieces of fish & not at all as good as usual. the service was extremely slow. Sorry to say I will not be going back.View more
We came here for our 10-year wedding anniversary & really wanted to like it but unfortunately the inconsistencies across the board left us with a disappointing overall experience. Food - entrées reasonably good (octopus 8/10, beef tartare 7/10), mains excellent (hanger steak & confit duck both 10/10), side of potatoes au gratin bland (5/10), desserts really inconsistent (crème brûlée was good nothing amazing 6/10 but the fondant was basically a muffin 0/10 as you can't call that fondant). Service - inattentive & rushed. Perhaps the servers are overworked as they did seem to be trying very hard but (1) poured us tap water into our half full glasses when we had been drinking sparkling (they did comp us a new bottle), (2) failed to ask us if we wanted any drinks after we finished our first ones, (3) did not check on food except after we had finished eating which meant we had basically finished mains before being able to bring to our waiter's attention that he'd forgotten our side order & (4) had to send back the fondant/muffin instead of asking for a correctly cooked one as we had finished eating & had been waiting for a while by then (in fairness they did not charge us for this dish) Would not recommend for any important celebrations given the current level of inconsistency which is a pity as the mains were really fantastic!View more
View more
The taste is okay. However, the space between the tables is too narrow. It was also inconvenient to go to the bathroom. Unlike the fancy image restaurant on the first floor, the bathroom in the basement smells musty.View more

Top place for oysters! Julian is not only an expert shucker- he is a true sommelier. Beside this, there are Unique menu items like walleye fish, wonderful wine selection, fresh soups, but the service & atmosphere are what really will bring you back. Our waiter engaged us & helped us discover some of the best gems on the menu. Highly recommended, our favorite restaurant in Montreal!View more
