Review Summary

Le Passé Composé is widely recognized as a standout destination for elevated brunch in Montreal, celebrated for its creative menu and beautiful presentation. Many guests are impressed by the unique, decadent dishes like the foie gras and bone marrow, noting the thoughtful textures and high-quality ingredients. While the atmosphere is frequently described as gorgeous and elegant, the experience can sometimes be affected by tight seating arrangements or noise levels. Service is often highlighted as attentive and friendly, though some visitors have experienced inconsistencies or longer wait times during peak hours. Despite varying opinions on pricing, many diners view the restaurant as a memorable spot worth visiting for a special meal.

Revisits in 2026:
I don't know what happens exactly, but this is not the same Passé compose as it used to be years ago. Foods are different; location is different; not the same vibe as all.

Original review year back:

Great experience! Creative presentation of food. Good quality food & very nice service. The smoothie is on another level. Ramen is also amazingly good (using pasta noodle instead of regular ramen noodle.)
The French toast is more like a deep fried bun in Chinese hotpot restaurants. Not recommended for Chinese like me.

Had high expectations but were sadly let down. While the service was great the food was not. There was a general lack of flavour across all our dishes. French toast was especially poor.

Been here twice & it's been a solid 10/10 both times. The presentation, food, & service are all immaculate. Every dish offers a new taste to explore. We tried the Foie Gras, Rustic & the French Toast & I'll definitely be back to try more!

Bad & slow service, & incredibly pricey in a way that isn't represented in the dishes or experience. Not sure they had enough servers working. Didn't get menus for 15 mins after being sat for a reservation, didn't get drinks until after food was brought out. Food came out & sat for 10 mins while we waited for cutlery & napkins to eat with. We watched a dog get sat outside & given a bowl of water before we got our drinks. Two stars for the French toast & sides, the duck confit with marrow was way too rich & imbalanced. French toast was heavy & greasy but tasted good, with fruit to balance heaviness, nothing special. Wouldn't go back, wouldn't recommend. Best part of our visit was the playlist. A note for tea drinkers - they don't have a way for you to pour all your tea at once when steeped. so any cup beyond your first will be bitter as there's no way to remove the loose leaves they give for the tea. The leaves arent also fully filtered so you will get leaves in your cup.

I tried two items out of their brunch menu + two smoothies, the Rustic & the French Toast + Strawberry & Dubia Royal smoothies.

If you like mushrooms, you would absolutely love the Rustic, it was very delicious & well-made dish, I enjoyed it a lot! On the other hand, however, the French Toast was the worst I've ever had in my entire life, & I'm a person who loves French Toast! Nevertheless, this was so poorly done that I couldn't even finish one of the breads out of the two, it was fried with something like bread crumbs on top, it was too greasy, & had an awful texture.

Regarding the smoothies, the Strawberry one was very delicious, but I wasn't a big fan of their Dubai Royal.

As for their service, both times they brought my smoothie almost at the end of my meal. When I requested to take the rest with me, they brought me the to-go glass on the table to do it myself!! This is not a service one would expect to receive in a restaurant on this level & with this vibe.

One of the best French toast I've ever had in my life

Best patio brunch ever. The lox & cream cheese bagel was stacked high with smoked salmon, mousse-like cream cheese & omg breaded & fried avocado. Matchstick frites came with house made mayo. & the French toast was delicately but deeply fried, with mini jogs of Quebec maple syrup. The people watching was a bonus floor show. Highly recommended, but not cheap.

🦆 Foie Gras - Absolutely amazing! Melt-in-your-mouth texture, rich & silky - this one's a must-try. ✨

🦴 Bone Marrow - Would skip. Way too oily for my taste - just not worth it.

🍞 French Toast - Deep-fried, slightly greasy but hits that comfort food vibe. Not bad, just not exciting.

👀 Spotted some dishes from Harbour at the next table - looked pretty good! Might check them out next time. 👌

I was a big fan of the original spot & finally got to try this updated space - it's different in feel but still delivers on flavour. We had the Bagel Passé Composé (with fried avocado & smoked salmon), the Rustic plate with Gaspor pork & wild mushrooms, & of course, the iconic panko-crusted French toast. The textures & presentation were spot on, & service was quick & friendly. It's clear they've elevated their menu without losing the soul of what made Passé Composé a Montreal brunch legend. Will definitely return!
