2.5/5 As a long time visitor it pains me to say that my last handful of visits to Le Pain dans les Voiles have been disappointing. The fluffy, crisp & delightful pastries that I knew & loved are no more. Instead they have been dry, hard & often bland to the taste. The coffee is still excellent, but I fear I have eaten my last danish at this establishment. I will keep telling myself that it is better to have loved & lost, than to never have known love at all. But this loss is spectacular in its intensity. I can only hope that they will have "wind in the sails" once again, so that our affair may be rekindled.
Lorsque je vais à Montréal. C'est un must d'arrêter. Tout est bon, mais surtout leur Quiche
There are more than a handful of coffee shops in this neighbourhood all with their own unique flare & vibe. But when it comes to fresh bread, consistently delicious coffee, extremely kind staff, & spacious inside to read or write, there is no comparison to Le Pain dans Les Voiles. Some of my favourites: Chia Matcha Pudding Chouquettes Fromage Scones Cappuccino & their filter coffee is still always crisp. They take all forms of payment here as well, as some others in the neighbourhood are cash/debit only.
Some of the pastries are quite good: chocolatine, croissant, abricotine. Go for these classics or the breads & you won't be disappointed. Many of the pastries are deceptively bad: almost all the muffins, randomly some scones. The prepared food has been mostly bad. They try different things which is good of them, often cycling out the bad food they have invented. Notable terrible things I have eaten here: breakfast croissant with egg inside (had to throw out, something I never do); grilled cheese (surprisingly had raw red onion, raw green pepper & a sweet jam inside, none of the 6 people we came with would take a second bite; a yogurt bowl with mint & granola & dried fruit & jam that just didn't work at all.
The bread & food are decent but this is my second & last time ordering drinks from here. My first experience was a latte that was supposed to be iced that I got hot & then tasted watery in the end anyway. Today I ordered matcha latte that took 10 mins to prepare & received a slightly green tinted cup of milk. No flavour at all, just felt like I was drinking a cup of milk. For 7$ drink I find this very poor quality. Breads are fine but save your drink purchases for elsewhere.
Update: 2024. I tried this place again & enjoyed some other bread selections which were very good. The service was very pleasant as well. Here's my past review from 2 years ago: I really wanted to give top ratings to this popular bakery, however, I found what I bought a little disappointing. The vienoisseries had very little of the croissant-like texture that I look for. The raisin bread, although well baked, tasted bland. Unfortunately, I will be moving on to other bakeries. It's really too bad, because, the employees were absolutely welcoming & pleasant.
I only tried the chocolatine & chausson aux pommes, & they're both nice. The best thing about this place is its atmosphere, especially in summer when de Castelnau is pedestrian
