Fantastic dining experience from start to finish ! It was our first time, but won't be our last. This BYOW Afghan resto had ambiance & amazing food at reasonable prices, & great service.
We had the table d'hote #2 to try as much as possible. Started with a delicious lentil soup, followed by a massive Kabuli Palaw (roasted fork-tender lamb shank) accompanied by a huge plate of savory brown basmati rice, flavoured with afghan spices, raisins & carrot juliennes. Absolute amazing !
Other lamb dishes sampled were the Sabzi Chalaw (with spinach) & Korma Chalaw (tomato based), all equally delicious. Reservations are recommended, although we didn't have to wait at all, & it was Valentine's Day !
Everything about this place is amazing! The ambience, the staff, & of course the best thing being THE FOOD! My partner & I went here for the first time after hearing multiple friends rave about the place & have no regrets. We will 110% be back again & spread the word to others what they're missing out on. We both got the two different lamb shank dishes: one with tomatoes sauce & other with the carrots & raisins & both were incredible. Anyone should be pleased by the price for what you get & it's quality. & it's BYOB.. another bonus!
I've visited Khyber Pass a few times over the years, & it's always a memorable experience.
The restaurant has a cozy Afghan atmosphere, generous portions, & dishes full of rich flavor.
Their meats are tender, the rice is aromatic, & the fresh herbs & chutneys balance everything beautifully. Service is friendly & relaxed, which matches the laid-back vibe.
A great spot in Montreal if you want authentic Afghan food.

Authentic Afghan dishes. Taste is true to traditional flavours & still delightful to western palates. High quality ingredients. Appropriate portions. No extreme spices or flavours. Beautiful atmosphere with traditional Afghan decorations & music. It's like a poetic journey to Kabul. Marti did an excellent job as waiter during what was clearly a busy evening.
Had a lovely meal at Khyber Pass! The Kabuli Pulaw with lamb & the mantu were both delicious. The portion sizes were generous & the prices were reasonable, especially for the area.
Our waiter was fantastic. The atmosphere was relaxed, & the terrace seating was a really nice touch, especially on a pleasant evening.
I do wish they served bolani & chapli kebab, which are some of our favorite Afghan dishes & would round out the menu nicely. Interestingly, most of the diners were not Afghan. Would go back if in Montreal!
This is my favourite restaurant in all of Montreal (& maybe the world?) All of the dishes are made with an incredible amount of thought & care, my go-to is the Mantoo. Great atmosphere that showcases the culture & heritage of Afghanistan, & they even have a patio at the back to enjoy with some cool murals. You mustn't miss this hidden gem.
Not only the best Afghan food I've ever had, but probably one of the best MEALS I've ever had in my life. Everything down to the last kernel of rice was aromatic, delectably spiced, & tender. I previously had a favorite lentil soup at another place, but Khyber Pass has dethroned that other lentil soup. The rose pudding was creamy & comforting.
The service was rapid & impeccable.
This is definitely a restaurant/cuisine for you if you appreciate cardamom.
I will say that the menu is mostly focused on meat dishes, however, I actually did an entirely vegetarian spread when I went, & it was scrumptious. I was also pleasantly surprised by the post-dinner tea. I am very much a snob about tea, so often expect to be disappointed by something served in a restaurant, but it was really nice & smooth.
Hospitable service...
Lovely atmosphere...
& most relevant, the food was spectacular.... all of the dishes we ordered were superb... perhaps one of the best lentil soups I have had...
I've been here twice, the second time within a few weeks of the first because I loved the food so much. Highly recommend going with the set menu in order to sample all of the dishes; really great value for all the food you get. I've enjoyed every dish I've had, from the bread & dips right to the dessert. Highlights for me are the sambossa, borani aubergines, kabuli palaw, & korma chalaw. We got lucky the first time as a group of 5 people without a reservation, but in general I would recommend making a reservation. The only suggestion for improvement would be more consistent service. The first visit, we had very attentive, helpful service where the waiter explained the dishes & also told us our options for different types of tea. The second time, a few weeks ago, the service felt quite impersonal & almost rushed, & I received a black tea instead of being asked for my preferences. That said, the host noticed I was quite cold & actually turned the heat up for me, & the timing of each course was great.
