Kazu is widely celebrated as an authentic and vibrant Japanese izakaya in Montreal, offering a menu filled with fresh, creative, and comforting dishes that consistently impress diners. Many visitors describe the experience as a culinary journey, highlighting the lively atmosphere, the skill of the chefs working in the open kitchen, and the friendly, efficient service that keeps the bustling space running smoothly. While the restaurant is known for its compact size and the inevitable wait in line due to its popularity and no-reservation policy, the vast majority of guests agree that the quality, unique flavors, and overall memorable experience make the wait well worth it. Whether enjoying the signature grilled items, seasonal specials found on the wall, or the popular shrimp burgers and curry, patrons frequently return, often describing it as one of the best dining destinations in the city.
This is the best authentic Japanese restaurant ever!!! The food 10/10, the service 10/10 the only downside is the wait to get in but that's how you know the place is worth it (s.n. they don't do reservations)
Simply one of the best restaurants in Montreal & perhaps in all of Canada.
The attention & passions put into each dish can be not only tasted, but felt. The operation of the staff is like a moving painting behind the counter- I strongly recommend sitting at the bar to witness it.
There is something simply special within these walls. Always worth the wait & be adventurous with your order!
On this visit my favourites were the smoked eel wraps & the vegetable croquettes.
So good! Worth the wait. Definitely try to come at opening to avoid the long line.
Seabass, lamb chop, & the unagi bowl was the best.
Shrimp burger & smoked duck was good aswell but I probably wouldnt re-order.
Homemade ice cream good finish :)
Kazu is undeniably one of Montreal's premier Japanese dining experiences.
Upon entering, you're greeted by a cozy, warm, & traditional ambiance. The staff exemplify Japanese hospitality, being attentive, polite, & eager to address any inquiries. The menu strikes a perfect balance, offering a diverse selection without overwhelming patrons. Notably, the menu is creatively displayed on a collection of papers affixed to the wall, adding to the restaurant's charm.
Every dish we sampled was impeccably presented & delectable, reinforcing the notion that there are no wrong choices at Kazu.
In short, Kazu offers an authentic & memorable Japanese dining experience in Montreal. I wholeheartedly recommend it without hesitation.
Tried the Vegetarian range at Kazu. We had Veg Bowl & Bibimbap Japanese style (veg).
We wanted to try the Japanese curry which was in the chef's list apart from the menu but it was out of stock. But no regrets, both the dishes were absolutely amazing. The sauces, both quite unique were rich in flavor & i would highly suggest you to try them. The tofu was very soft, felt fresh. The vegetables were quite nicely done, carrots were pickled & sesame seeds drizzled on top. On the bibimbap contained an egg nicely done, the rice tasted soooo good & overall very well worth it compared to the price. Both bowls were very big & imo one bowl could serve 2 people.
Kazu stays at a bar to it's high rating, especially the staff is awesome. Very polite , helpful, quick service & everything you wish in a restaurant.
The ambience is also unique. Feels like a hustling & bustling restaurant in Japan with songs, happy people & tasty dishes.
Definitely order the fried beans on the side.
We also had desserts , one cheesecake ice cream & one sake icecream. While the cheesecake icecream was the best (really soulful) in Montreal, the sake icecream was very unique & we tried it for the first time. It has vanilla ice cream with sake on the top. Which made it taste quite unique & definitely try it out if you love experimenting things.
In all, superb place, deserves 5 star ⭐ & the staff makes the place lovely.
My favorite restaurant of all time. I've been going here since 2012 & I can honestly say that they consistently blow my mind every single time. There's always something new to try & everything in their menu is delicious from starters, main meals, desserts & their drinks. My friend & I got there right when they opened on a saturday at 5pm & we were seated in front of the kitchen & it was the best spot. Seeing them in action was fascinating. The staff are so organize & efficient. My friend & I ordered about 9 items in total & spent 63$ + tip each.

Bbq eel, oysters, takoyaki, 48 hour pork, chirashi zushi
Everyone should at least try this restaurant more than once! Yes there's the waiting in line as this is a small restaurant but it's worth the experience & the service is fast.
