Review Summary

Grumpy's Bar is described as a true Montreal institution, unpretentious, welcoming, and deeply rooted in the community; from stepping into the basement pub, the atmosphere and the staff feel warm and make visitors feel at home, reflecting why the venue is so woven into Montreal's fabric. It's not fancy, and that is the point, with comfortable, unpretentious drinks and people who are even better. The bar is seen as more than a place to drink, a community where locals and visitors can meet new people and feel welcomed regardless of language. The vibe is cozy, lived in, and authentic, with a timeless feel that avoids chasing trends and is stronger for it, and a strong connection to Montreal's local music scene through regular bluegrass nights, open mics, visiting artists, and stand-up nights. This is suitable for anyone seeking a laid back, authentic bar experience, whether local or visiting, and whether speaking French, English, or anything else, as the welcome is inclusive. Closing impressions emphasize returning to Grumpy's Bar for its simple, genuine character and easygoing energy, with notes on the Wednesday Open Mic Night and other evenings offering live music, good beer, and a sense of community.

Not a good environment whatsoever. The bartender ignored me & my friends alll night. But more importantly the open mic night was incredibly sexist & only allowed men on stage. When we complained & asked when our friend would be up next, the guy in charge caressed her arm & told her that she'll be called when she's called & that the order of the sign up list didn't matter. When we began to grab our stuff & go the man called her name but we were already upset & leaving so we told him she wouldn't be going up. The man then proceeded to blame her for not performing & was saying negative things about her over the microphone. Anywho I'd only go if I were a man & didn't care about how women were treated.

Love this bar! Great atmosphere - live music was really fun & friendly, warm neighborhood pub feel. The service was excellent - both bartenders I had were courteous & speedy. I definitely recommend it!

Holy Moley this place is Fantastic! The staff & other patrons are all wonderful people. Although I think Nick the bartender cheats at arm wrestling . Will be my go-to spot whenever I'm in Montreal. Trivia night was a blast (thanks Michael) . No food so we ordered pizza delivery from our favourite place. Amazing spot! Sparky
