Every time I come to Grumpys I walk out having resolved decades of trauma. I used to come here in CEGEP & drink straight wild turkey & it made me into the man I am today.
My husband & I luckily stumbled upon Grumpy's on our way to another pub & we just decided to stay at Grumpy's until our dinner reservation. We loved the vibe, the beer choices & the bartender & locals were extremely welcoming! Our favorite pub during our whole trip!
Probably the worst bartender ever!
It's a shame because the bar itself is pretty good, especially the live music!
Overall Impression:
A true Montréal institution… unpretentious, welcoming, & rooted in community.
What I liked:
My wife & I both love Grumpy's. From the moment we walked down the stairs into this basement pub, we felt comfortable & at home.
The atmosphere & staff create a genuinely warm & welcoming environment. It's easy to see why this place is so steeped in history & such a part of Montréal's fabric.
It's not fancy, & that's exactly the point. It's comfortable, unpretentious, the drinks are good, & the people are even better.
Grumpy's is more than just a place to grab a drink, it's a community. I can show up on my own & end up leaving having met new people, which says a lot about the kind of place it is.
Atmosphere & vibe:
Cozy, lived-in, & authentic. There's a timeless feel to it… like stepping into a space that hasn't tried to change with trends, & is better for it.
It's also deeply connected to Montréal's local music scene, with regular nights dedicated to bluegrass, open mics, & visiting artists. They even host open stand-up nights for those brave enough to take the stage.
Who this is good for:
Anyone looking for a laid-back, authentic bar experience. Whether you're local or visiting, & whether you speak French, English, or anything else, you'll feel welcome here.
Closing:
A place we keep coming back to… simple, genuine, & full of character.
Not a good environment whatsoever. The bartender ignored me & my friends alll night. But more importantly the open mic night was incredibly sexist & only allowed men on stage. When we complained & asked when our friend would be up next, the guy in charge caressed her arm & told her that she'll be called when she's called & that the order of the sign up list didn't matter. When we began to grab our stuff & go the man called her name but we were already upset & leaving so we told him she wouldn't be going up. The man then proceeded to blame her for not performing & was saying negative things about her over the microphone. Anywho I'd only go if I were a man & didn't care about how women were treated.
Love this bar, people are friendly, beer is fresh & served perfectly. Everytime we can go have a pint. It's such a cool place
Have to know the vibe in advance or enjoy that type of bar scene. Not for everyone, but it's served by friendly staff & most regulars are the same.
It's a Montreal downtown staple bar for locals. Definitely not the same vibe as the tourist spots a block over.
