About

Galo specializes in authentic Portuguese charcoal-grilled chicken prepared with traditional spice marinades. The menu features tender poultry cooked over an open flame to ensure a charred exterior and juicy interior texture. Signature offerings include pressed sandwiches packed with sliced chicken, fresh vegetables, and savory sauces on crusty rolls. Guests encounter a straightforward menu focused on high-quality proteins and classic side dishes like seasoned fries and crisp salads. The kitchen emphasizes bold, piri-piri heat profiles alongside cooling citrus notes that define regional cooking styles. This establishment maintains a functional atmosphere dedicated to efficient service and consistent flavor delivery. Every portion reflects standard techniques used for preparing Mediterranean poultry, prioritizing substance and flavor intensity over elaborate presentation or complex culinary fusion methods.

Review Summary

Galo is widely praised for its exceptional Portuguese barbecue, with frequent highlights including the perfectly seasoned chicken, fresh fries, and tender grilled meats like chorizo and calamari. Many patrons appreciate the welcoming and cozy atmosphere, noting that it serves as an excellent spot for both business lunches and family dinners. While the vast majority of visitors commend the friendly and efficient service, experiences can occasionally vary due to the restaurant being busy, and most guests find the pricing to be very reasonable for the quality and portions provided. Overall, it remains a highly recommended destination for those seeking a delicious and reliable meal in a warm setting.

We were looking forward to this one! Pork & chorizo were excellent. However, the chicken was dry, bland, overcooked. Fries were great.

No drinks menu, so when the bill came I was surprise to see they actually charge 15$ for a glass of white wine (The bottle was a Catarina, the bottle is 15$ at the SAQ).

The service was disappointing - two overworked waiters were constantly running around, clearly stressed. They were kind, but they couldn't take the time to give the service you'd expect. Owner seemed very friendly.

So yes, overall I get that this is a popular spot but I can't say I recommend it.

Amazing Portuguese food! I'm visiting this place for years now, it's a hidden gem in Mount Royal. The food, the service & the selction of imported Portuguese wines are the reasons why you should go to Galo. You should also come here in the summer to enjoy the tables outside if you can.

Why? Why? We had been coming to Galo for many years but only recently returned. My husband, son & I thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The service was attentive & the wine suggested by our waiter was delicious. Why the why? Why no English menus? At the very least, why not bilingual? We all speak French now but I still prefer my menus & services in English, wherever it can be legally & courteously offered. Our waiter courteously offered to help with any questions. They only question I have for this fine establishment - WHY?

Food is delicious, we will definitely go back, but be aware do not take wine by the glass, (there’s no menu for the alcohol so you’re kind of ordering with your eyes closed) the white wine Catarina 15$ a bottle at SAQ they charge 15$/glass & it’s a small wine glass…… I will definitely look next time for the price of a bottle because that was really too expensive.
