I went to Express Indian on Somerled twice so far since moving to Montreal (one using public transport, once on foot). The food was good (the one time we actually got to eat the food we paid for). Here is my big issue: twice i went to this restaurant fully prepared with my own containers. You know, pollution and the current climate crisis in mind. the first time, i had plastic containers. the food came from the kitchen in my containers, FULLY WRAPPED IN TINFOIL. The next time, learning from the first encounter, i brought large-sized mason jars. They brought my jars back empty and sat them on the counter. Finally, after quite a long wait, they brought out two of their own, one-time-use ALUMINIUM take-out containers. The person then informed me (at that time, and not before bringing out this WASTE) that the openings of the jars were too narrow to be able to get the food inside. It is so disheartening as it is to be footprint-minded in a seemingly disposable world. But this kind of situation can be utterly crushing to someone trying hard to live without creating more waste. It's almost as if they are trying to make some sort of political statement by straight up refusing to use the containers i bring in with me (even though this would save them a bit of money - just use the containers for the next person)!
In the end, the food from their aluminium containers went EVERYWHERE in their plastic bags and in my backpack (unlike had it been in sealed mason jars) and my family and I did not even get to enjoy the food.
Best Indian Lunch specials in the city - price and quality! Service depends on the number of people dining when you are there, but the food quality and preparation is always excellent...the Meat and Vegetarian lunch plate specials are the house special...Enjoy!
Excellent service. Bon prix. Cuisine 6/5. À recommander fortement.
My husband, son and I really like this restaurant. My son, age 9, can sometimes be a picky eater, but he LOVES the butter chicken dish. My husband and I have our favorites as well. My husband is a vegetarian and has a lot to choose from. Sometimes we eat at the restaurant, sometimes we get food delivered and tonight we did carry out and picked it up ourselves. The food is always delicious. When we do carryout, the servings are usually enough for us each to get two meals out of our dish.
I will highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. One of the best Indian food, I have ever eaten in an Indian restaurant. Every dish we ordered including desserts were excellent. Every one of us out of 15 people including childeren loved the food. Every time I will come to Montreal, I will eat only at Express Indien.
I was uncertain about the spices used in Indian food.
Mr. Ram, the owner took my order request of: no salt; no sugar and mildly seasoned.
I was impressed with the freshness & flavours presented to me.
I return once ever week & take advantage of inexpensive lunches also.
The friendly nature of the staff was very welcome, I was treated with genuine friendliness.
I hope Mr. Ram will get his cappuchino machine very soon. This place also sells bagels & super cheese bagels but nothing oversweet to counter the wonderful effects of his Healthy Indian food.
This is hands-down the best Indian food in town. So friendly and excellent service. This is a great hole in the wall with tremendously excellent and authentic Indian. Consistently excellent. I order in a few times a month. They happily deliver to me even though I am out of their projected area. Daal Mahkani is delicious, my favorite and a tricky dish to find on any Indian menu.
This place is a great find, unexpectedly located on Somerled. I had been told by a fellow foodie friend that I had to check it out and she was totally right.
The food is delicious, service terrific and the prices really reasonable. My taste buds were incredibly happy. Apparently they are the "real deal". The friend said she talked to the owners and ordered something that she had eaten while travelling in India and it was just as amazing as she had remembered it and right on for preparation.
I went for a thali plate myself as did my dining companion but I need to go back soon with more bodies to continue the tasting fest… more bodies = more to sample. ;-)
Check it out. I promise you will not be disappointed.
Outstanding, authentic Indian cuisine prepared by an experienced master chef and served in simple yet very comfortable surroundings.
Don't be fooled by the area or the interior-the food is absolutely wonderful.
On previous visits, we have tasted everything from curries to tandoori, to their lunch thalis, and virtually everything in between.
My default resto when I have a (regular) craving for Indian food.
This was truly a surprise. I had heard about it through a friend and didn't think it would impress me as not many curry/Indian restos in Montreal have ever lived up to any of the ones I've experienced abroad in my travels. I usually go to Jean Talon when I want authentic delicious curry...but now will most definitely go back to this one.
This family run resto has it down! They not only make delicious food (to specification) but are familiar with many other authentic dishes, even if it's not listed on the menu. The owners (a couple) are proud and are relentless at pleasing their customers. They recently bought this once bakery front in NDG (Yagel Bagel: baked goods, bagels, and pastries) and still sell these products for take out. They offer lunch specials on their Indian cuisine as well. Comfortable, renovated...very clean and friendly/prompt service. It feels a bit like a café and doesn't quite have the ambience of a full evening/dinner restaurant yet but the hospitality more than compensates. My thali plate was generous in offerings as it was in portions and very inexpensive (vegetarian option as well). The entrées/appetizers are equally yummy and inexpensive (samosas were light and not greasy, onion bhaji melted in my mouth). My dish came with nan and rice and my friend ordered the onion version of the nan. By far the best I've tasted to date!. The main dishes (which I sampled from my friend's selection) had just the right amount of seasoning, spices and not swimming in oil. They offer take out/delivery as well. This is a hidden treasure in Montreal waiting to be discovered!!!
Ate there after a long day at work. Looks like a fast food place but they serve full meals. Also carry bakery goods that the previous owner used to sell! Tried biryani and butter chicken and nan bread.
It was all delicious. Usually take home leftovers but we ate every last bit. Have to go back and try other dishes.
