Review Summary

Chez Chili is widely praised for authentic Sichuan flavors, bold spice, and generous portions that offer good value, with standout dishes like General Tao, salt and pepper shrimp, eggplant with pork, mapo tofu, and Hunan specialties frequently highlighted; multiple comments call it the best Chinese in Montreal's Chinatown and a reliable go-to for spicy, well seasoned dishes, including tofu options and vegetable dishes; the atmosphere is described as cozy and basement-like, sometimes noisy, with fast service that can feel rushed during peak times; several reviews commend friendly, attentive staff and quick turnover, while a few report inconsistent service, attitude around tips, or slower moments, and some hygienic concerns such as not seeing hands washed or occasional cleanliness issues; takeout can be problematic at times with missing or late orders, and there are occasional complaints about spice levels not matching expectations or dishes arriving not as spicy as advertised; overall the food is delicious, authentic, and worth a visit, with many plans to return despite some caveats.

Tout était délicieux,… on attend un peu avant d'être servis mais bon, cela en valait la peine.

Food portion & quality was great! General Tao & Salt & Pepper shrimp+Squid were excellent.

Both meals came w/a spoon & the table had chopsticks already.

Service could be improved simply because we weren't asked if we needed anything when the meal came (more napkins or hot sauce).

Ambiance could be better if they had music playing & as always, bathrooms could be cleaned much more often.

Final note: if you run cold, don't sit in line w/the door during winter. It's just magnetic flaps after you enter the main door. So there was a heavy draft.

Absolutely delicious food; it's alwayssssss consistently amazing. Lots of vegan options too! My fave is the wood ear mushroom spicy salad & the potato, eggplant & peppers 😍 but you can't go wrong with anything. Best Chinese resto in the city!

Overall great Chinese food - some of the best I have ever had.
We ordered a few plates to share - General Tao's Chicken, Beef & Brocolli, Spicy Chicken, Vegetable Noodles, & Vegetable Fried Rice.
The only issue was that the spicy chicken was not at all spicy. It had chili peppers served with the dish, but the chicken itself was not spicy.

We came here for dinner with my family?the food is good, & the waitress who took our order was very kind, checking on us multiple times during the meal. However, there was a small guy seemed unhappy to have us dining there-perhaps because it was almost closing time? He simply placed the dishes on the table without a word, & when I tried to ask him about the names of the dishes, he ignored me. It seems that rather than answering our questions, he preferred replying to text messages on his phone

The food was delicious & the service was excellent. The servers were very friendly & worked hard to accommodate our group of ten on short notice. Highly recommend stopping here if you're looking for a bite in Chinatown.

We came for Christmas Day lunch with our baby in a stroller. The restaurant is located in the basement with no elevator, which required us to physically lift the stroller down ourselves. From the start, it was clear this restaurant is not stroller- or baby-friendly.

Despite being three people (my husband, myself, & our baby), we were made to wait because the staff refused to seat us at a 3-4 person table-even though several were clearly available. It felt as though our baby was not considered a guest at all.

We were then placed at a 2-person table, with a high chair pushed tightly against the wall, leaving barely any table space. This arrangement made it obvious that babies are treated as an inconvenience rather than customers, simply because they don't generate revenue.

When we politely requested a larger table for safety & comfort, we were dismissed with a blunt'cannot, we are busy.' The tone was unwelcoming & came across as take it or leave it.

We also noticed a clear difference in how non-Asian diners were treated, which made the situation even more uncomfortable.

Overall, this experience showed a complete lack of consideration for families with babies & completely ruined our Christmas Day.

Ordered a huge lunch order for the office for our holiday lunch, & the service & food was really above & beyond expecations. I'll have to go eat there in person in the near future!

Had dinner her last night 12.13.25 while visiting from Florida. It's a small place, upstairs, located in the Chinatown area of Montreal & the food was very good. We had the beef fried rice & the general Tao's chicken. It was just us two, but the generous portions were plenty for 4. If we're in Montreal again, we'd love to try other dishes here.
