Chez Chili is widely regarded as a standout destination in Montreal for authentic, flavorful, and generous portions of Sichuan and Hunan cuisine. Many diners praise the restaurant for its consistently delicious dishes, particularly highlights like the General Tao chicken, salt and pepper shrimp, and fresh vegetable stir fries. While the atmosphere is lively and bustling, which can sometimes result in a loud environment, the efficient and friendly service frequently contributes to a positive dining experience. Despite occasional notes regarding salt levels or wait times during peak hours, the majority of visitors consider this basement gem a must-visit spot that offers exceptional value and an inviting, homey feel.
The food was generally enjoyable, though a bit on the salty side. We particularly liked the General Tao.
Unfortunately, the service was exceptionally poor. We received no greeting or welcome upon arrival; instead, the waitress simply pointed us to a table & dropped off a single menu for our party. After being seated, we waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to take our order. When I asked a question about the menu, I was interrupted mid-sentence & told,'I'll give you more time,' despite being ready to order. It then took another 5-7 minutes to get the waiter's attention.
Throughout the meal, no one checked in to see how everything was or whether we needed anything. While the food had its merits, the level of service overshadowed the entire experience.
Every dish is bursting with flavor. Hearty & generous. If you love spices that numb you, this is it. My favorites are the braised pork, twice cooked pork, & the fish & lamb in chili hot soup. I pair this with white rice & a wong lo kat as a refresher, & it's bliss of a meal.

If you're in Montreal's Chinatown, go to Chez Chilli. We ordered General Tao Chicken, Hunan Beef, & Salt & Pepper Shrimp & everything was delicious. The shrimp was crispy & flavorful, the beef had the perfect kick, & the General Tao was classic comfort food. Great spot for a yummy Chinese meal!
