Review Summary

Café Vasco Da Gama comes across as a cozy, welcoming spot in downtown Montreal that feels like a quick escape to Portugal with a warm European vibe, perfect for a casual breakfast, lunch, or a relaxed coffee break. Reviews highlight tasty, fresh food and a good lineup of pastries and sandwiches, along with satisfying omelettes, salads, and desserts, and they praise strong espresso, friendly staff, and the option of indoor or outdoor seating that suits conversations or study. The atmosphere is repeatedly described as charming and unpretentious, making it a good spot to unwind and catch up with friends. Yet some experiences mention downsides such as inconsistent value with some dishes being overpriced or average, occasional slow service, and items that are too sweet or not as flavorful as expected. Taken together, the cafe is viewed as a pleasant, approachable option with a distinct Portuguese feel, a focus on quality ingredients, and a range of breakfast and lunch choices, especially appealing to those seeking a European cafe experience in Montreal.

Went for a quiet & nice breakfast & that's what we got. The omlettes were fluffy & the fruits were fresh. The bread had the right amount of butter & was fried just right. The pistachio croissant & the natas were the right amount of sweet that we didn't know we craved in the morning. The staff were friendly & we also got a nice & cozy place to chat & have our breakfast.
Recommended if you are in the Montreal downtown area looking for some excellent breakfast joints.

This is by far my favorite spot in Montreal for coffee or lunch!
The food is amazing & super fresh. My favorite is their canard figue sandwich with the beet salad - I rarely order anything else it's that good! The Portuguese sandwich is super yummy too. Their desserts are insane as well - especially the chocolate chip cookie & the pastel de Nata of course!
The drinks are always perfect - I always get a tea because they serve it in a beautiful pot, or a Chai latte.

The staff is also incredibly attentive & kind, & the ambiance is very warm & fun. Also a great study spot with free wifi.

I could not recommend this place more!

Great Portuguese spot for an espresso. Close to the hotel we were staying. I was happy to see the pastel the nata, it's ok not authentic as it would in Portugal. If you are going to serve something, I feel you need to out in the effort to make it authentic, serve it warm w powdered sugar. It was soggy, not good. N like $4! You order at the register n they'll bring you thd good.

Had their natas. The best I've had & I'm not even a dessert type person. 2 star for atmosphere. Place is nice but can smell constant cigarette smell in non-smoke area.

In search of heavenly pastels de nata? This is the place! We sat outside, & the smokers in the no-smoking zone diminished the otherwise wonderful experience.

Been eating at Vasco for years. Our office often uses them as a caterer & the quality is consistently good. Recently ate in for the first time since the pandemic & it was nice to see nothing had changed. Service rolls quickly even at lunch hour & the sandwiches come out perfectly hot. Prices are good for the quality of food. Definitely recommend the lamb & the duck confit sandwiches. The natas are absolutely fabulous & taste as good as in Portugal. Obrigada!

One of my favorite cafés in MTL, Vasco da Gama is a fancier place to grab a ILLY Espresso & a wide variety of sandwiches & other things.

It's yellow walls & blue sea tiles invite your eyes to feast on it's beautiful decor as it's a great place I'd recommend for a fancier coffee date. Being a Portugese style café, they also have the world famous Portuguese egg tarts called "Natas" & a few portugese imports such as Piri-Piri hot sauce, fancy-schwancy sardines tin cans & a few other interesting finds. Also one can buy a whole can of that high-end renown ILLY coffee in the tin cans so you can enjoy it at home.

A classic on Peel street when you need a break from shopping!!
