Overall, Café Cherrier emerges as a Montreal institution that consistently delivers classic French bistro fare with generous portions, a warm Parisian vibe, and attentive service. The menu is praised for reliable staples like onion soup, gravlax, onglet de boeuf, gigot d'agneau, ris de veau, and steak tartare, with brunch and desserts such as eggs Benedict and tarte tatin earning frequent compliments, and the terrace is often highlighted as a superb setting for al fresco meals. Prices are considered reasonable for the quality by many, though a few reviews note that they have risen and some call portions or value not ideal at times. Service is repeatedly described as friendly and professional, with staff remembered for their attentiveness, yet some experiences mention slower pacing or occasional missteps in busy rooms or in wine recommendations. The atmosphere is described as convivial, intimate, and often lively, sometimes noisy, but with a consistent level of comfort and charm that keeps diners returning. Taken together, the reviews suggest a dependable, well loved bistro that balances tradition and quality, with room for improvement in noise control and consistency.
We had a reservation for 4 & requested a table outside for 7pm, only to arrive & find out that the only table for 4 outside had been given away to a reservation for 2. They had nice tables with a view on the inside, but we were told that we could only sit there until 8:30 because they were reserved at that time. So, not wanting to be rushed, we sat in the corner of their small windowless side room. Our waitress brought our drinks, took our order, & then we didn't see her again until our drinks were empty, our first courses had been finished & sat on the table for a half hour. We finally asked another person to bring us water. My companion ordered a bottle of wine, & then after the dinner had arrived, had to ask another person to find our waiter to have the bottle brought over. My steak came out medium rare instead of medium, & to their credit, they were quick to take it back & fix it. However, on arrival, I had no fork or steak knife- I had to get up & find the waiter to ask her for it- & the mayonnaise for my fries had been removed & not replaced. The entrees themselves did not arrive at the table until almost 8:30 meaning that if we had accepted the table in the main dining room, we would have not been anywhere near finished with our meal because it took them that long to bring us our entrees. The nice thing I will say about our experience was, that despite the many flaws in our experience, the waiter was nice & had a good personality. This restaurant was recommended to us by someone who had very fond memories of it. I am sorry to say that we were quite disapointed.
