Café Castel comes across as a bright, welcoming hub near the McGill area with large windows that lift the mood and a cozy vibe that suits studying or hanging out; the coffee is reliably good and the pastry selection is frequently fresh with crowd favorites like croissants, tiramisu and various loaves, while the ever friendly staff and occasional discounts for students add to the appeal; the space stays open later than many nearby spots and offers a lively, European feel that many visitors enjoy, though busy periods can lead to slower service and occasional lapses in table cleanliness, and a few reviews note temperature swings in the glassy sections and occasional inconsistency in desserts or drinks; overall it remains a popular go-to for a relaxed cafe experience with a strong emphasis on atmosphere and solid coffee.
The atmosphere & overall vibe of the place are great - it has a very relaxing & comfortable feel. Unfortunately, the menu is far too limited. For someone who comes in hungry, the options are really not satisfying enough.
In a city famous for its bagels, every café should have a proper bagel section with a variety of options available throughout the day. Instead, the selection here is very shallow. Savory food options are limited & not filling, while sweet items are much more common.
The same goes for croissants - they should be available at all hours, which honestly is not difficult to manage.
My only suggestion would be to expand & enrich the menu. Especially considering the café is located right next to a school, the current menu feels surprisingly limited.

Coffee was meh. No latte art whatsoever despite other comments. Service is brusque & unfriendly. Espresso drinks aren't made properly (saw a flat white that looked like a latte).

It's close to McGill campus & has a very nice place to work, with large windows that make it very bright during the summer.
Open longer than many local cafés, which is a bonus!
Cakes are delicious & usually fresh.
The only problem is when it gets crowded, with usually one or two staff who are both baristas & responsible for taking care of the place, you might end up with tables left unclean & no one taking the dishes or leftovers.
The cafe has a nice cozy vibe for studying or hanging out. I ordered a mocha latte but the price I paid for a medium, I expected a bit of a larger size. It's bit on the sweeter side but I like the consistency with the steamed milk. Service was alright, the guy who served me seemed a bit grumpy. At least they have a student discount which is nice.
Went there for a coffee today with a friend, & was amazed at the service I got from Joseph. First time I meet him , & he made my day!
I don't remember the time I had such a great service & friendly chat when getting coffee . Coffee was great , the service made it excellent!
Thanks Joseph

Ordered vanilla latte & a marble chocolate loaf. The latte was fine & the loaf was a bit dry, might have been because the place was about to close. Other than that the place is cozy to work.
A beautifully made place. It feels like sitting on a cozy street in old Europe. A little balcony with coffee cups hanging from it, a dark wooden chair, sipping coffee while watching a busy Montreal street go by. They have sweet, as well as non-sweet options
